One
beautiful spring day my grandchildren had come into the city from their
farm, to spend the day with me. I made a picnic lunch and loaded them
in my van and we were off to the zoo.
Mark, age 5 and
Sally age 4 had been around lots of animals on their farm. They had
chickens, cows, pigs, horses and many other animals including two
dogs and two cats. They had never been to the zoo.
The
first animal we saw at the zoo was an elephant Sally ask, "Grandma why
does that big pig have two tails?" I answered explaining that was an
elephant, not a big pig and he has a trunk and a tail, "Because
God made him that way."
Then we moved on to the Zebra. Mark ask
in a very excited voice, "Grandma why does that horse have
on striped pajamas?" Again I answered explaining that is a Zebra,
not a horse and he has black and white strips, "Because God made him
that way."
In the next section were the Tigers. Our zoo has
both orange and white Tigers. When the children saw them they ask,
"Grandma why do those cats have orange strips, and the others have
white strips?" I explained they are Tigers, not domestic cats, and some
Tigers have orange strips while others have white strips, "Because
God made them that way."
We continued through the zoo and the
children were fascinated with all the unusual animals and they
ask me questions about all of them to which I always answered,
"Because God made them that way." We enjoyed our picnic lunch and
finished our tour of the zoo. It was then time to go back to my
home.
That evening when my daughter came to pick up
her children and take them back home to their farm, I heard them
telling her the story of how they had spent their day at the zoo. They
told her about all the different animals and how unique each one
looked. Then I heard Mark say, "Mommy, all the animals were so
beautiful, because God made them that way!" I was so proud they
realized things don't need to always look the same to be
beautiful.
