I
have often seen famous people on talk shows telling about
the person who was a great influence on their life when
they were a child. Well I’m not a famous person but there
was a couple who were the ones who first led me to
Christ when I was a child back in the 1950s.
My
family was very poor and for many years we lived in my
Grandmother’s house but when I was in the second grade my
parents bought this modest little house on a street called
Twin Oaks Drive. Around the corner and up the hill was
a very small wooden church building. In fact it was really
just a small house that was used to hold church services.
The pastor, Brother Hansen, and his wife, Sister Hanson of
this modest little church came and visited with us
when we moved in. They invited us to come to their church
and told my Mother they would come every Sunday and pick
up my younger brother and myself. To this my Mother
agreed.
Brother and Sister Hanson began taking us
to the Hartman Baptist Church every Sunday. These were
the nicest people that ever walked this earth and I soon
found out would be the ones who taught me about Jesus and
led me to Him. It didn’t matter to them that my
Mother could only afford to give us a dime to put in
the collection plate, or that we didn’t have
nice clothes to wear, we were treated with much love.
The little projects that I made in Vacation Bible School
fueled my interest in artistic endeavors. I spent every
Sunday learning about and singing songs about
Jesus.
We lived on Twins Oaks Drive for about
six years before we then moved. Those six years were the
best ones I had as a child and that was due to the
Hansons.
I kept in touch with them after we moved
for many years. The last time I talked to them on the
phone they were both getting up in years and were in bad
health. They were no longer doing their work for God at
Hartman Baptist Church. They were no longer giving their
love and the love of God to poor little kids like
me. But there are many that they led to Christ and like
me will never forget this wonderful couple who was a great
influence on their life.
I wish I could tell them
just what they ment in my life but they both went to Heaven
many, many years ago. I know one day I will get to
see them again and I know they must be very special
angels for the good work they did and the love they gave
to many children who needed to know God.
This is a true story from my life.
