Chapter VI. Decision-Making

Group Problem Solving

Decision making in a group is challenging since the more people involved in the process, the more demands and expectations there are. Open communication is very important when making decisions in a group. Use the checklist below as a guideline for making decisions in a group situation.

  • ___ state the problem or issues clearly
  • ___ ask questions to get the group communicating
  • ___ get everyone involved in the conversation
  • ___ summarize main themes and check for accuracy
  • ___ be sure all viewpoints are considered before moving on
  • ___ record common themes in an area where everyone can see them
  • ___ keep the conversation on track by restating the problem
  • ___ clarify meaning of points made
  • ___ begin to evaluate the suggested ideas and eliminate as appropriate
  • ___ summarize accomplishments
  • ___ ask for decision and check for consensus
  • ___ discuss a plan for action
  • ___ discuss a plan for follow-up

If your team filled in this form individually, add up the scores and identify the two items with the lowest scores. As a group, discuss the lowest scoring areas or problem items and identify five action steps that could help the group improve in these two areas.

Summary

With open communication and someone to initiate the problem-solving process, decisions can be made in a group. Remember that solving problems, like playing baseball, it gets easier with practice.
