Our Parish Vicar

Rev. Fr. Koshy Alex

Our Beloved parish Vicar, Rev. Fr. Koshy Alex was affectionately called Koshy Kunju since his birth on 26th September 1957. His parents were Alex Matthew and Marykutty Alex of Thoompunkal Family in Mavelikara, Kerala.

As per the canons of the Malankara Orthodox Church a priest cannot enter into Holy Matrimony after his ordination but it is perfectly all right for a married person to enter the presbyterate. However such a priest cannot assume higher Episcopal charges. He can attain the highest position as a 'Cor-Episcopos'.

Our Achan married on 28th May 1984, two months before his priestly ordination to Mrs. Mary Koshy. Today they have two boys Matthew Koshy and Alexy Koshy.

Achan has come a long way before arriving at Andheri Parish. According to Church canon, a priest must be transferred within 5 years of service within a parish.

Rajkot in Gujarat was his first parish which he served simultaneously with other parishes in Gujarat state such as Velaval, Bhavnagar and Porbandar. Later he assumed independent charge of Ahmedabad and later Baroda also within Gujarat state.

Then he came to Mumbai and served at the Malad, Dadar and Kalyan parishes. he was later transferred to Doha in Qatar, a small country in the Persian Gulf to render service to the Indian Orthodox Christian community stationed there.

After this sojourn abroad, he returned to India in November 1998 and took charge as the parish Vicar of our church, The St. Johns (Indian/Malankara) Orthodox Syrian Church at Andheri in Mumbai.

His leadership and disposition has endeared him to the elders and the students alike. It is during his tenure that the new land for the proposed church was purchased at Kondivitta near Andheri. Various fund raising programs have been organized to collect funds for church building and the smooth functioning of the charitable dispensary already under the auspices of the parish. Besides Sunday school has been rejuvenated. The Headmistress of the same was awarded with a PhD during the same period and was duly felicitated by the parish. Picnics were organized and a massive get together feast was organized in September 2002. Also prizes were giving to outstanding students in competitive exams. The MGOCSM is functioning in leaps and bounds with the Church choir also reaching maturity.

We are indeed blessed to have him with us.
