A better candidate for Ivorybill scaling. It's fresh as evidenced by the color of the exposed wood. There were shards of bark scattered around the tree. The only other thing that could do this would be a beaver. Taken in the Dagmar WMA, May 28, 2005.
Tough to say what did this - could      have been a Pileated but probably not  a beaver. Better examples to follow...
