Who Are We

The Ottawa Valley American Civil War Historical Re-enactment Society (2nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry Company A) is an American Civil War Re-enactment Society preserving the memory of the Brave Men and Woman who faught in the American Civil War.

Our members come from all walks of life from cleaners to Docters. There is a role for everybody and we can all learn from each other. Our Head Quarters is in Ottawa Ontario Canada with members in Kingston Ontario, Candor NY, Mexico NY and Reaching as far as North Carolina.

We are a small but integral part of a larger organization called the United States Volunteers, U.S.V. for short, which comprise close or above 2000 members. The U.S.V. is lead by The Rock Colonel Dana Heim (Click) on his Light Coloured horse.

The O.V.A.C.W.H.R.S. was founded in 1980 by a total of 3 members. From it’s creation as had Two main roles.

1· To promote public awareness of the participation of Canadians and British North Americans in the American Civil War (1861-1865)

2· To portray to others a proper representations of life in the 1860's

From these humble beginning our society as grown in numbers including soldiers Rifle Company which represent the 2nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry Company A and a very strong woman auxiliary. Our members include Ladies and Gentleman from all walks of life with an interest in the Civil War.

Our main role is the Infantry company of the American Civil War but also have members portraying. Engineers, Signals Corp, Womans Aid Society, Nurses, Doctors, Reporters, Photographs, Musicians and many more things.

We attend an average of 16 functiones every year. The include Re-Enactments (Battles, Period Ball, Full Encampment, Womans Tea and Much More), Dinners (Regimental & Brigade), Parades (Town and City Anniversaries, Remembrance Day & Special Occations) and School Visits (Camp Life and Living History).

The majority of events we attend are in Northern NY and Vermont. We also go to National events like Antietam Ma and Gettysburgh Pa.

We also attend schools functiones every year to teach the children about life in the 1860 and the involvement of the 2nd Michigan V.I. We do not charge to attend schools or parade. We are trying to attain non-profit organization status and all donations goes into a unit fund which will allow us to do many things. Some of these I hope will be preserving monuments and replacing Civil War head stones which have greatly deteriorated.
