A memorial Mass for George A. Zammit, former owner of Laughlin's Bar and Grill and one of the founders of the Allentown Art Festival, will be offered at 10:30am, Saturday in St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 885 Sweet Home Road Amerherst, New York. Burial in Holy Mother of the Rosary Cemetery, Cheektowaga, will be private.
Zammit died November 21, 2000, in his home in Dunedin, Florida, under the care of Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. He was 66. Born in Detroit, he came to Buffalo with his family as a child. He attended St Joseph's Collegiate Institute and the University of Buffalo, where he was a standout as an athlete and in the classroom. He enlisted in the Army during the Korean War and served as a specialist in the Medical Field Service. He worked as a national product manager and chemical specialist for Printax Corp. and Rochester Midland Corp. He later became vice president of corporate sales and marketing for Airwick Professional Products. He operated Laughlin's, a landmark tavern on Franklin Street, during the 1950's and 1960's. He was among the organizers of the Allentown Art Festival when it originally was held on Franklin Street. He was a former president of Connie Mack Baseball and a board member of the Eggertsville-Snyder Football and Amherst Ponytail Softball youth leagues. He also coached Little League baseball, football, and girls softball. A 49-year member of the Knights of Columbus, he served as a financial adviser and assistant to the organization's general agent. He also was a member of Post 275, American Legion, and Post 2473 Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was active in charitable events in the Clearwater, Florida area of the Elks and Sertoma clubs. He and his wife, the former Joanne Snuszka were married in 1959. They lived in Ameherst until 1985, when they moved to Dunedin. In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, George A. of the Town of Tonawanda; an adopted son, Flutie Douglas of Dunedin; two daughters, Jody and Julie both of Dunedin; a brother, Joseph of Louisville, KY; and three grandchildren.
