Notes for Francis M. Gibson:
According to his account of his life written for his chapter of the Confederate Veterans, his father had died before the fall of 1862. Then his mother died that year. He was only 15 years old and having no other place to go, he went to join the unit where his brother Joseph was serving - the 39th NC Infantry, Co. E., where he served for two years and eight months.

His first fighting was at Meridian, MS.

Mr. Gibson, in relating his war experiences to a Cleveland, TN Daily Banner reporter said, "Our regiment served under the command of Gen. Johnston until 'Ole Sherman' started through Georgia, then they put us under Gen. (John Bell) Hood."

When Sherman was spreading his path of destruction, Gen. Johnston's fighting was called by some historians "a brilliant retreat" as the starving Confederate soldiers continued to battle the well-equipped Northern Army.

But Johnston did not surrender until 17 days after Gen. Robert E. Lee had signed the peace papers at Appomattox. It was still April when he did finally surrender at Durham, NC, "the last General of the south to put down his arms."

His daughter shared, "We can remember Papa telling how hungry they were,...they ate horse meat, and dug in the ground for leftover roots and garden foods."

F M stated in this article "I was in the Battle Above the Clouds' on Lookout Mountain." ( He also fought in the Battles of Nashville, Franklin and Murphreesboro - Stone's River.)
