LL Cool J (b.James Todd Smith, 14 January 1968, Queensbridge, NY) burst onto the scene in 1984 when he sent Def Jam Records a demo tape of the 12-inch "I Need A Beat". Russell Simmons [Chairman and co-founder of Def Jam and brother of Run (Joseph Simmons) of Run DMC] listened to LL's demo tape, and liked the sound of him, therefore signing LL to Def Jam within that year. LL was the first artist to sign with Def Jam, followed by the Beastie Boys not long after.

The following year he released his first album Radio (which features his first single I Need A Beat), becoming a platinum success.

Other albums released were BAD [Bigger And Deffer] (1987), Walking With A Panther (1989), the Grammy-award winning Mama Said Knock You Out (1990), 14 Shots to the Dome (1993), Mr.Smith (1995), Phenomenon (1997), The G.O.A.T. (2000), 10 (2002), The DEFinition (2004), Todd Smith (2006) and Exit 13 (2008). LL has also collaborated with a number of artists and has featured on several movie soundtracks.

LL has also starred in a number of films, with Krush Groove as his first in 1985 (making an exclusive performance of his hit single "I Can't Live Without My Radio"), Wildcats in 1986 (starring Goldie Hawn), then returning to the box office in 1991 with The Hard Way after taking a break from the film scene to focus on his music. And due to the success of Mama Said Knock You Out, LL received a number of offers to star in films.

Other films he has starred in are Toys - starring Robin Williams (1992), Out-Of-Sync (1995), The Right To Remain Silent(1996), Touch (1997), Caught Up(1998), Halloween H20(1998), Deep Blue Sea (1998), Any Given Sunday(1999), Charlie's Angels(2000), and Kingdom Come (2001), just to name a few.

LL has had some album flops in his career (14 Shots To The Dome and Walking With A Panther) but has managed to bounce back to the top time & time again (with classics such as Mama Said Knock You Out and Mr.Smith).

LL is undoubtedly one of the greatest hip-hop artists of all time. He has truly withstood the test of time. Unlike other rappers, who have simply called it quits or have taken long hiatuses, LL has consistently dropped hot music time and time again for us to listen to. And that's why he remains one of the "G.O.A.T.(Greatest of All Time)".
