Hip-hop artist Nelly (b. Cornell Haynes on November 2, 1974 in Austin, Texas) grew up in St.Louis and experienced first-hand the dangers and temptations of life on the street. His escape came when he moved as a teenager with his mother to nearby suburban University City. There, he discovered lures of a more constructive kind - playing baseball, storytelling and writing rhymes.

With some high school friends, Nelly formed the St.Lunatics, who scored a regional hit in 1996 with the self-produced single, "Gimmie What You Got". Frustrated in attempts to land a record deal as a group, they collectively decided that Nelly would have a better chance as a single, banking on his winning stage presence and superior rhyming skills. The gamble paid off - soon thereafter, Nelly caught the attention of Universal, who released his debut album, Country Grammar, in 2000, featuring four smash hits, "Country Grammar", "E.I.", "Ride Wit Me", and "Batter Up", with his posse, St.Lunatics.

In 2001 Nelly worked with St.Lunatics to release their debut album, "Free City", which featured their first singles, "Midwest Swing", and also featured "Batter Up", because as previously mentioned, the group featured on the track.

In 2002 Nelly released Nellyville, his follow-up to his first-album. And just like his first album, this one was a smash too. Featuring the smash hits "Hot In Herre", No.1 smash "Dilemma" (featuring Kelly Rowland from R&B trio Destiny's Child), "Air Force Ones" (f/St.Lunatics) & "Work It" (f/Justin Timberlake). In late 2003 a remix album was released - titled Da Derrty Versions - The Reinvention. In 2004, Nelly dropped a double-dose of dirrty south rhymes with his simultaneous release of Sweat and Suit. Sweat is the first album in the double-dose offering, which is more hip-hop influenced and more "gritty". Suit is the second album in the double-dose offering, and it's described as the more melodic of the discs. In late 2005, Nelly released Sweatsuit, compiling the best moments of his previous albums, Sweat and Suit, with the addition of four new tracks. In 2008, he released Brass Knuckles.
