International Harvester Farmall 340

I bought this tractor, along with a Farmall 140, in February 2002. It had not run for several years, was missing some sheet metal, the battery, the carburetor, and several other small pieces. The seat was shot, the hydraulic system has a split hard line, and one of the tires was flat. But the seller assured me that "it ran when parked". So I brought it home, as I had been looking for a 340 for some time - I like the early 60s IH machines, and this one had all the things I like in a tractor - independent PTO, live hydraulics with remotes, Torque Amplifier, three point hitch (adapted from the two point IH Fast Hitch) and full instrumentation.

After putting a lot of work into repairs, including my first ever attempts to weld up a rotted rear rim (as replacements were not available), I got the tractor 95% of the way restored. Then I was able to locate the missing "340" emblem, a new fuel level gauge, and have the starter repaired. I finally finished the restoration, including a new decorative pan under the grille in the spring of 2003. Images of my progress can be seen at my Fotki album <www.fotki.com/mikesloane>.
