The 1979 International 184 was the end
of the line that began with the Farmall Cub in 1947. So now I have an
example of the first model and the last. The 184 is twice as powerful
as the Cub, has a steel frame, 12 volt alternator, an independent PTO,
and Cat I three point hitch, but is otherwise very similar mechanically
to the original. But all the small changes made by IH together make for
a much better lawn mowing tractor. When I brought it home, it needed
only some minor work - the lights fixed up, adjust the PTO,
replace one idler pulley, some missing bolts, and a coat of paint. I am
very pleased with the machine so far; the fat "turf" tires and low
center of gravity make it very stable and easy on the sod, and the
extra power make mowing even tall grass a breeze. The only thing
remaining at this time is to find a replacement for the missing
decorative plastic grille.
