Hang The Dogs
The True Tragic History of the Balangiga Massacre

By Bob Couttie

A US President declares war on America 's only southeast Asian ally
and an island of peace becomes a nation at war

Hang the Dogs will probably be the definitive history of the Balangiga Massacre... comprehensive and informative..  Couttie has provided a huge amount of information and a large number of valuable insights into the conditions that produced the Balangiga incident, the thoughts and assumptions by many involved Americans (and some Filipinos) about U.S. policy, the Philippines and the war that led up to it, and a century's worth of consequences, intended and not, that followed. His achievement is not likely to be surpassed.

“Careful scholarship”

“It is truly ground-breaking for shattering decades-old myths about Balanginga.”
Philippine Consul Patty V. Paez

"Bob Couttie brings together the finely honed craft of a story teller, the instincts of a bloodhound, a deep understanding of the Asian culture and its people, and rigorous scholarship... History writing at its best"
Michael D. Sellers

lean prose, the book is cool.  Easy to read.  It is the product of  ten-years assiduous research -- possibly the most exhaustive work on the Balangiga Incident”

9/11 of its day

On September 28, 1901, hundreds of townspeople in Balangiga, on the central Philippine island of Samar attacked a US Infantry garrison, killing two thirds of the infantry company and forcing the two dozen survivors.

It was the 9/11 of its day, shocking a complacent America and setting in train a brutal and controversial retaliation.

True story can never be told

Even decades after the event an investigator would write: “The true story of this event can never be told”. Now, a ten-year research project uncovers the truth behind the attack, its relevance to today’s conflicts – and a hope for the future.

Chew The Bones

Chew The Bones: Maddog Essays on Philippine History is an eclectic mix of articles, some of which have appeared in Business Day Magazine, on a history theme. Subjects vary from considering pre-Hispanic slave raiding as an exercise in corporate recruitment, to the theft of Philippine shipwrecks, the death of the man who invented music videos, the fate of the USAT Liscum of Balangiga Massacre fame, and the most expensive dress in the world.

It is a work in progress that will, in due course, appear in hard copy, so it does not include the usual footnotes and bibliography. It currently (June 2005) runs to 90+ pages (half American letter size).

It available for free download as a PDF file. Email the author if you want to know when updates are available. It is copyright. It may be freely distributed only in its original pdf file form.

You can right click and use the usual 'download' or 'save link as' function or, if your browser is suitably equipped, open it in your browser as a pdf and use the 'save page as...' option under your file menu. Whatever.
