Whittier
College Presents Tribute to Hawaiian Musical Icon
Friends and colleagues of the late “Uncle” Moe Keale will
celebrate his life with an evening of aloha and tribute at 8 p.m. on
Saturday, June 14, at the Ruth B. Shannon Center for the Performing
Arts at Whittier College.
Keale was one of Hawaii’s most distinctive vocalists and an
accomplished ukulele master who died in April of 2002, just three
weeks after making his final mainland appearance t the Shannon
Center.
He
had performed at the Shannon Center three times and was always a hit
with his audience.
Mel Amina and Analu Aina, members of Keale’s band, will be
featured in the concert, along with Kalani Kupau and Bill Kaiwa.
Leialoha Amina, Mel’s wife and a close friend of the Keale family,
will perform the traditional Hawaiian hula during the concert.
There will also be a ukulele workshop and a hula workshop led by the
Aminas, beginning at 4 o’clock that afternoon. Workshop
participants will be integrated into the show that evening,
according to David Palmer, Shannon Center manger and production
coordinator.
The workshops are free, but reservations are required. Tickets
for the concert are $32 for the general public. Reservations
and tickets are available by calling the Shannon Center Box Office
at (562) 907-4203.
