When a group of longtime Vegas clubbers collaborated to open the first "underground" nightclub on the Las Vegas Strip, they couldn't possibly have imagined that most of the hotel-casino properties would soon follow suit. Today, Utopia may not be the only Vegas nightclub playing techno, trance, breakbeat, jungle and deep house music, but nevertheless, it remains a leader. Most of the world's top DJs have acknowledged as much -- Sasha, Paul Oakenfold and Keoki have all spun here -- and live techno acts the likes of Rabbit in the Moon, Electric Skychurch, Expansion Union, BT and native sons the Crystal Method have taken to Utopia's stage. Expect the best kind of sensory overload. If you need to chill out, simply adjourn to the upstairs patio, flop down on one of the overstuffed sofas, kick back and watch the Strip happen around you.
Ra capped a $400 million renovation of the Luxor with a futuristic Egyptian motif evocative of the sci-fi epic "Stargate." You can expect an evening every bit as spacy and fun as the club looks; deep house, techno, top-40 and trance mixes keep the crowd going -- courtesy of a host of local DJs that includes The Funkler -- and British dance music conglomerate Ministry of Sound has all but set up residence. Recent visitors have included superstar DJs Christopher Lawrence and Paul Oakenfold, and now that Virgin Atlantic flies directly to Vegas from the UK, there's no telling how high the ceiling will rise. The Sun God smiles. No tennis shoes, tank tops or cutoff jeans. Wednesdays through Sundays; over 21.
Sin City becomes Surf City -- after a fashion. Surfboards adorn the walls, beer is served out of ice-filled metal tubs, and busty waitresses sport bikini tops. Popular with tourists and locals, The Beach parties on and on, constant as the sea itself. Brunch Sundays; sports bar open 24/7 with lunch served daily. Banquet facilities are available for private parties.
Once you get beyond the velvet ropes of Studio 54, you're transported back to the heyday of the classic New York City discotheque, recently immortalized in a feature film nobody saw. Celebrities and club kids alike schmooze on plush leather couches, and the industrial warehouse motif recalls the trashy hip that made the original club a legend. Early in the evening, DJ Frankie and DJ Jose 2 Hype spin the sounds of the late '70s and early '80s; as the evening progresses you can expect deep house and progressive beats. Tuesday evenings Studio 54 hosts Eden ("Erotically Delicious Entertainer's Night"), Las Vegas' premiere entertainer's night. From the exotic high-flying go-go dancers to the "snake nymphs," Eden more than earns its name. Not to be missed. Over 21.
The pleasures of Rain in the Desert lie in its contradictions. Like the hotel-casino that hosts it, the club was built for locals but encourages out-of-state visitors to leave the Strip and party down. It is cavernous without feeling impersonal, is unique without being gimmicky and is elegant without being pretentious.
Located on the 19th floor of Polo Towers inside the Sky Lounge, Hush displays spectacular 180-degree views of the Las Vegas Strip, with ample seating and an easily accessible bar. The club also includes the rooftop pool deck (closed during the winter). The lounge area is dimly lit with soft background music and a relaxed vibe. The rooftop pool deck features: 14 Moroccan cabanas, a dance floor, DJ booth and a live performance area. Furniture on the rooftop is laid back and luxurious, with six oversized elevated beds and plenty of bench seating. The venue can accommodate more than 500 people.
The GhostBAR
The RUM jungle
Located on the 55th floor of the Palms and accessible only by express elevator, ghostbar is a realm unto itself. True to its name, the bar feels as if it's floating over Vegas, a world apart from the chaos below. Three of the bar's four walls are glass, and the view through those windows -- a proper 180 degrees -- is absolutely breathtaking.
With Sin City's largest supply of rum stacked to the ceiling, rumjungle is no stranger to the limelight. rumjungle offers the most diversified experience to be found on the Vegas Strip, shunning the common raver and catering to an upscale, mature clientele. rumjungle is open all week, but the pretty people come out in droves on Friday and Saturday nights. On any given night, the dance floor trembles as DJ Toast spins the "wheels of steel," providing partygoers with a fresh dose of Latin House, Caribbean and African beats that will make you move. Seating comes at a price, so if you're on a budget, plan on standing -- the VIP sections are reserved for nightclubbers with cash to burn. From the walls of water lined with fire to the illuminated bar, rumjungle defies all convention. This is one scene you don't want to miss.
