Montgomery County Infantry Units
The following Infantry units are known to have contained men from Montgomery County. Company E, 61st Infantry Regiment was organized in Montgomery County, Georgia in 1861, and is generally made up men from the county. Because so many young men joined units in other counties and few of the state and county militia rosters survived, no list for Montgomery County will be complete. Company B, the "Tattnall Rangers," was formed in August 1861.
(1.) William M. Grant, private, enlisted August 31, 1861; died of typhoid fever, Jekyll Island, February 3, 1862.
(2.) John T. Sharpe Sr., sergeant, enlisted August 31, 1861; transferred to Company K; surrendered at Appomattox, April 9, 1865, at age 37. He was born in Tatnall County, April 8, 1827. He was one of only five men of this company still with the regiment when they left the trenches of Petersburg, VA on April 2, 1865.
(3.) Nathan Sharpe, enlisted August 31, 1861, private; died of phrenitis at the Lynchburg, VA hospital, August 10, 1862. He was 30 and left a widow Martha.
(4.) Jackson S. Yeomans, private, enlisted August 31, 1861; wounded in the Wilderness, May 5, 1864; captured Petersburg, March 25, 1865; released June 30, 1865. He was born in Emanuel County, June 13, 1840.
Company H, 61st Georgia Infantry
Company H, "Tattnall Volunteers," was originally Company h of the 7th Georgia Infantry Battalion.

(7.) Wiley W. Sharpe, enlisted September 1861, private; captured Spotsylvania Courthouse, May 12, 1864; released March 10, 1865. He was born December 11, 1834.

Company K, 61st Georgia Regiment
Company K, "Sharpshooters," 61st Georgia Infantry Regiment, Gordon's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia, was formed in June 1862 at Charleston, SC from the other companies of the 7th Georgia Infantry Battalion (later redesignated as the 61st Georgia Infantry Regiment).
(1A.) Henry A Calhound, enlisted September 13, 1861, 4th Corporal and 3rd Sergeant; transferred from Company E to Company K, June 1, 1862; captured in the Wilderness, May 2, 1864.
2. B.F. Connor, enlisted June 1862, private; died Staunton, VA, December 1863. (Could be the Benjamin B. Conner of Company E who transferred to Company F and died in the hospital at Farmville, VA, on November 20, 1862 or James F. Conner who also transferred from Company E to Company K and who died on medical furlough, September 22, 1862. The father of James was William D.W.C. Conner.)\4. Martin T. Company G, 49th Georgia Infantry
Company G, the "Laurens Volunteers," was formed in March 1862. The 49th Georgia Infantry Regiment served in the Army of Northern Virginia and fought at Malvern Hill, Seven Pines, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, and Petersburg before surrendering at Appomattox.
(1.) Hiram Grimes, enlisted August 26, 1862, private; died at hospital in Staunton, VA, November 9, 1862, of febis typhoid and was buried at Thornrose Cemetery.
(2.) James B. Hall, enlisted August 25, 1862, private; captured in the Wilderness, May 6, 1864; died Elmira Prison, NY, February 16, 1864 and buried in grave 2201, Woodlawn National Cemetery.
(3.) Rueben Harrelson, enlisted August 26, 1862, private; died of pneumonia, December 13, 1862 at the Chimborazo Hospital No.1, Richmond, VA.
(4.) William Harralson, enlisted August 26, 1862, private; died of diarrhea, General Hospital No.2, Lynchburg, VA, January 8, 1863 leaving widow, Elizabeth of Little York, Montgomery County, GA.
(5.) Lewis McDaniel, enlisted May 16, 1862, private; retired from service, December 14, 1864. He was a substitute for William H. Burch.
(6.) Andrew J. Pope, enlisted August 26, 1862, private
(7.) Thomas J. White, enlisted August 26, 1862, private; discharged because of health, February 1, 1863, at age 35. He was born May 12, 1828, and died in Wheeler County, November 29, 1918.

Company F, 48th Georgia Infantry
Company F, the "Johnson County Battleground Guards," was formed in March 1862. Their regiment served in the Army of Northern Virginia. Se the 49th Georgia for their battles. Casualties in the 48th were extremely high. Fifty-five percent of their effective number were lost at Gettysburg alone. (3.) George W. Davis, enlisted March 4, 1862, private; died of pneumonia, Chimborazo Hospital, Richmond, VA, January 1, 1863. He was born in 1838.
(4.) Samuel J. Davis, enlisted March 4, 1862, private; may be the J.J. Davis paroled by the 10th Michigan Cavalry at Newton, NC about April 19, 1865. He was born in 1845.
(5.) Thomas Ganus, enlisted March 4, 1862, private; reported absent without leave by January 1, 1864. He was born in 1841.
(6.) James Gibbs, enlisted March 4, 1862, private; died of typhoid fever, Richmond, VA, July 19, 1862. He was born in 1844.
(7.) John Miller, enlisted March 4, 1862, private; died in Richmond, VA, June 30, 1862; he was born in 1839 and his father was Joseph Miller.
(8.) John W. Miller, enlisted March 4, 1862, private; paroled by the 10th Michigan Cavalry at Newton, NC about April 19, 1865. He was born in 1832.
(9.) Thomas l. Miller, enlisted March 4, 1862, private; detailed for hospital nurse, April 22, 1864; captured near Petersburg, VA, June 22, 1864; exchanged March 15, 1865. He was born in 1838.
(10.) Arthur W. Ricks, enlisted May 1, 1862, private; wounded Chancellorsville, May 2-3, 1863; wounded in leg, September 1862; absent without leave since September 1, 1864. He clamed to be at home on medical furlough at the close of the war.
(11.) Limond D. Ricks, enlisted March 4, 1862, wounded August 29, 1864; deserted since July 1, 1863.
(12.) William G. Ricks, enlisted March 4, 1862, sergeant; deserted February 1, 1864. He was born in 1841.
(13.) Irwin Spivy, enlisted March 4, 1864, private; detailed as a teamster and as a shoemaker. He was born in 1820.

(2.) Clement T. Mosley, enlisted March 4, 1862, private; captured at Manassas Gap, July 23, 1863; exchanged March 3, 1864. He was born in 1840.
(3.) William J. Mosley, enlisted March 4, 1862, private; absent without leave since March 12, 1863. He was born in 1835.
(4.) David H. Smith, enlisted March 4, 1862, private; detailed as a guard at Jackson Hospital, February 14, 1864; captured at Jackson Hospital, Richmond, Va. April 3, 1865. He was born in 1843.
Company C, 38th Georgia Infantry
This Company was at various times Old Company A, New Company C, Company M, originally the "McLeod Artillery," and later as the "Ben Hill Guards." Men for this unit came from Montgomery, Emanuel, Bulloch, and properly other counties. This regiment was originally formed as Wright's Georgia Legion in September 1861. Within a few months, they were redesignated as the 38th Georgia Infantry Regiment and served in Lawton's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. They fought at the battles of Gaines Mill, VA, June 27, 1862; Fredericksburg, VA, December 13, 1862; Gettysburg, July 3, 1863; and many other battles before surrendering at Appomattox. Their history is basically the same as the 61st Georgia (see Above). A short history of their campaigns from 1864 to Appomattox is on pp. 131-34 of volume four of Lillian Henderson, Roster of the Confederate Soldiers of Georgia 1861 -1865 (1960). Company H, 20th Georgia Infantry
Company H, "Telfair Volunteers," 20th Georgia Infantry, Benning's Brigade, "Ol Tige" Anderson's Division, Army of Northern Virginia, was formed in May 1861 in Telfair County from men recruited from Telfair, Montgomery, Wilcox, Coffee, Appling, Pulaski and other counties. They fought at Seven Pines, May 31, 1862; Seven Days Battles from Cold Harbor to Malvern hill; Second Manassas; Sharpsburg; Frederickburg; Chancellorsville; Gettysburg; Chickamagua; Fort Saunders, Knoxville, TN; Fort Gilmer, VA; Wilderness, May 5-7, 1864; Spotsyvania Courthouse, May 1864; Cold harbor, June 3, 1864; Petersburg to Appomattox Courthouse, April 9, 1865. They were among the defenders of the infamous "Stone Bridge" or "Burnside Bridge" at the Battle of Sharpsburg (Antietam), MD. Company B, 57th Georgia Infantry
This regiment was originally the 2nd Regiment, Georgia Infantry, State Troops, and was mustered into service in May 1862. They were redesinatated as the 54th Georgia Confederate Infantry Regiment. In early 1863, they were redesignated as the 57th Georgia Confederate Infantry Regiment. They served in the Army of Tennessee in Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Georgia. They fought at the Battle of Champion Hill and were surrendered when Vicksburg fell in 1863. After being exchanged they served briefly as guards at Andersonville Prison and were active in the Atlanta campaign. Only a handful of this regiment remained to surrender on April 26, 1865. Company B formally enlisted from Laurens County, apparently as Company I of the 2nd Regiment, 1st Brigade, Georgia State Troops. At the end of the war, they were merged with Company A to form the Company F of the Consolidated Georgia Infantry Regiment for their surrender at Greensboro, NC, April 26, 1865. A series of letters written by Wright Vinson (Company F), 1862 - 1863 is in collection AC63-107 at the Georgia Department of Archives and History. A good memoir of Company B, 57th Georgia, by John L. (8.) Riley Hester, enlisted August 7, 1863, private. He was born in Laurens County in 1826.

(10.) William W. Joyce, enlisted May 9, 1862, private, age 39; promoted to 3rd corporal in February 1864; captured at Vicksburg, July 4, 1863; surrendered at Greensboro. He was born in Dublin, GA, May 3, 1832.
(11.) Moses Lucien Pope Sr., enlisted May 9, 1862, private, age 22; captured at Vicksburg, July 4, 1863. He was born in Laurens County in 1838.
Company H, 57th Georgia Infantry
Company H, the "Baldwin County Independent Volunteers," was formed in May 1862. See Company B above for their history.

Company H, 47th Georgia Infantry
Formed in March 1862 as Company H, "Liberty Rangers," Glynn County, 11th Georgia Infantry Battalion, They served on the Georgia coast in 1862 before becoming Company H, "Fighting 47th" Georgia Infantry Regiment, Mercer's Brigade, Army of Tennessee on 12 May 1862. They fought at James Island, SC; Jackson, MS; Scessionville, MS; Chickamauga, GA; Missionary Ridge, TN; Dalton; Resaca; Oostanaula; New Hope Church; Kennesaw Mountain; Atlanta; John's Island; Honey Hill; Tulafinny; Pocataligo; Averysboro; and Bentonville. Before surrendering with Gen. Joseph Johnson near Goldsboro, NC in April 1865, they were merged with the 46th Georgia Infantry Regiment, Bonaud's Battalion, and the 28th Georgia Infantry Battalion to form the "1st Georgia". Several articles on their campaigns on the South Carolina coast were published in the Southern Historical Society Papers. Company A, 4th Georgia Sharpshooters Battalion, Bates' Brigade, Stewart's Division, Hardee's Corps, Army of Tennessee was formed August 24, 1861 . Originally this unit was Company G, one of six companies that made up Lieutenant Colonel M.A. Stovall's 3rd Battalion, Georgia Volunteer Infantry. On May 4, 1863, the 3rd and 9th Battalions of Georgia Infantry were consolidated into the 3rd Regiment under Stovall. This company, redesignated company A, and two other companies were broken off and formed into the 4th Sharpshooters Battalion under Major T. I. Caswell. Arriving in Lynchburg, VA in 1862, they were almost immediately sent to Goldsboro, NC for almost two months to quell local disturbances. Returning to Richmond, VA, they were hardly off their train when they were ordered to Tennessee to stop Union bridge burners. They were in the Atlanta Campaign from beginning to end and their battles included Cumberland Gap; Richmond, KY; Murfreesboro, TN; Hoover's Gap, TN; McLemore's Cove, GA; Chickamauga; Missionary Ridge; Tunnel Hill; Resaca; Dallas; Kennesaw Mountain; Pine Mountain; Peachtree Creek; Atlanta; Jonesboro; Franklin; Murfreesboro; and Nashville. They held a critical position at the Battle of Spring Hill, fought the day before the Battle of Franklin, TN. For their history, see the biographical sketch of Captain T.R. Derry wrote of the 4th Sharpshooters "it did its duty well on every field."

Company F, 2nd Georgia Infantry Regiment, Georgia State Line, was formed in February 1863 to guard the coast and the state's railroad bridges. Later they served with Cumming's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. They fought at New Hope Church, June 21, 1864; Atlanta, July 22, 1864; Jonesboro, August 1864; and Griswoldville.

Company G, 32nd Georgia Infantry Regiment, Colquitt's Brigade, was formed in May 1862 in Emanuel County. Originally this regiment was designated as the 57th Georgia. The 32nd fought at Battery Wagner, Charleston, SC; Olustee, FL, and James Island, SC, before surrendering near Goldsboro, NC, April 26, 1865. Articles on their campaigns on the South Carolina Coast were published in the Southern Historical Papers.

Company K, 1st Volunteer Regiment of Georgia (Olmstead's)
The 1st Volunteer Regiment of Georgia was created by act of the Georgia legislature in 1852. Although it was to have been officially designated as the 9th Georgia Infantry, the men of the unit continued to use its original designation. Company K, the "Washington Volunteers" of Chatham County, was formed in September 1862 and fought at Fort Pulaski, GA, 10 April 1862. When the fort surrendered, they were held at Governors Island, New York Harbor, and Fort Delaware, Delaware before being exchanged. They also served at the Siege of Morris Island, June 1862. In May 1864, they joined the Army of Tennessee at Dalton, GA and served Mercer's Brigade in Georgia and the Carolinas at such battles as Jonesboro and Atlanta before surrendering with Gen. They fought in the Siege of Atlanta, July 1864, and in the Battle of Griswoldville before disbanding on 27 February 1865 at Hamburg, SC, across the Savannah River from Augusta. See Earl J. Company E, 5th State Troops
(1.) Mark Phillips
Company H, 63rd Georgia Infantry "Phoenix" Regiment, Mercers Brigade, Army of Tennessee, was formed in November 1862 from men enlisted from Jefferson, Laurens, Montgomery, and possibly other counties. Originally the 63rd Regiment was the 13th Georgia Infantry Battalion but was redesignated as the 63rd Georgia Infantry Regiment in May - June 1863. For most of the war the 63rd Regiment was a combined infantry/artillery unit that served on the cost, chiefly at Thunderbolt and Rosedew Island. In May 1864, they joined the Army of Tennessee and fought in the same campaigns as the 1st Volunteer Regiment of Georgia (Olmsteadss) see above. The 63rd Georgia served with distinction at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. It was merged with other Georgia units to form the 1st Georgia regiment, just prior to their surrender.
