Project '57 Chevy

Under the Hood ~ Part 1

The details in the engine bay
The following shots show the detail we've put under the hood...
Project '57 with the hood up
  • OK...first, note the original '57 Chevy horns painted factory black!
  • A Griffin aluminum radiator is mounted in the V8 position.
  • We decided against A/C and use original heater with original style hoses.
  • Check out the trick Mooneyes "finned" air cleaner with matching valve covers!
  • A K&N air filter element is used.
  • A sharp eye will notice the ballast resistor for points style distributor.
  • New bolts hold the sheet metal together and highlight that new paint job!

The Mooneyes "finned" valve covers look great!

Check out the Mooneyes valve cover breathers!

I wanted to mount the breathers inboard but they rubbed against that big Holley carburetor.  We may end up putting a spacer under the carb for added clearance and then move the breathers inboard.

We also used chrome wing nuts to hold the covers down.

Remember, we were going for the RETRO look...
  • Holley intake manifold
  • Original GM hoses (repops) for the radiator using original wire clamps - they're a bear to get on!
  • Black rubber gas lines and vacuum lines
  • Stainless fuel filter
  • Original throttle arm (no cable here!)
  • Chrome (one wire) alternator and chrome alternator mounts

In this picture, check out....
  • The chrome timing chain cover
  • The chrome water pump
  • Power steering pump in the low position - mounts painted with Eastwood aluminum paint
  • The 605 power steering unit
  • Throttle return springs

We used black plug wires - at least for now...

  • The black plug wires go with the RETRO look but I'm not really crazy about 'em...

  • I probably just need to work in a better set of hangers for the wires..

Passenger side view of engine Here you can make out the top of the shorty headers that have been coated and are supposed to stay looking that good forever!
  • We continued with the wire clamp theme for the fuel lines.

  • The brass block for the water connection on the intake manifold adds a little contrast.

Check out the trick bowtie Chevy emblem on the radiator!

Note the "GM" and "square" stamps on the heater hoses - just like in '57
