Children learn
to read by reading and it is important that
children read
or are read to every day at home. As part of my
homework program,
students may borrow a book from the classroom
collection or the school
library. They place their books in a zip-lock
baggy, along with a Reading
Record on which they record the title, author and a
comment. The Reading
Record is returned every day to school (important
for tracking students'
reading and ensuring that the routine is maintained
and Reading Records
are not lost). If a students does not read on a
particular night, an X is
written in the box beside the date. When Reading
Records are completed
for a specific time period, students who have read
and recorded about
the books every day (no X's) receive a STAR READER
certificate. Once
they have received 4 certificates, they are given a
reward (e.g. stickers,
stamps, treat or free time).
