Joe dug our pond by hand
in our rock hard "gumbo" ground.
We read everything we could get our hands on
about creating a backyard pond and learned that it had to be
2' deep for goldfish to live in.
The pond is 6'x8'x2'.
We mounded the dirt up around the edge to prevent
ground water from draining back into the pond. We placed landscape
timbers across one corner to provide more protection for the fish
and to create the look of a waterfall.
Finally finished.
We lined the excavation with pond
liner bought from the local home repair supply store and filled
it with water. We put fish in too soon and they died. After
about 3 days the 'feeder' goldfish we got from the local tropical
fish store for 4 for a dollar survived.
Enjoying the new pond.
We placed stones around the edge and filled
between them with gravel and dirt and planted wild violets and
moss rose in the front and banana trees, canna lilies, elephant
ears, split leafed philodendron iris' and fern behind.
Waterlilies & Goldfish
At last count, there were about 30 goldfish
and multiplying rapidly and at least
one (I can't spell plecostimus) catfish algae eater and 3
waterlilies. Did you know that young goldfish are black?
....Feeding the sharks
It's fascinating for them to swim right into my hand to eat.
The pond is now eight years old.
The Winters here in Houston, Texas are usually very mild,
but we got two aquarium heaters and dangled them
in the pond on the coldest days of Winter
and aren't aware of losing a single fish.
This 'stone' is on the front edge of our pond.
