1989 20th Anniversary Trans Am The TURBO 3.8L |
The 20th Anniversary Trans Am was a limited production vehicle. It was based upon the GTA and was the ONLY Trans Am to ever have a V6 engine. But what a V6 - it was rated by GM at 250 horsepower because the Corvette was 265 hp. But in reality, from the factory this machine had 301 hp! Only 1550 like the one below were made, and five of other colors that were pulled from the standard production line to test-fit the 3.8L Turbo engine. Read the TTA Story for more info (link below). |
The front end. Notice the cloisson emblem in Gold and White. The PONTIAC and Indy 500 decals came with the car when new. It was up to the owner to decide whether to install it (along with the Indy 500 decals for the door) or not. The only problem with white is bugs and tar. The bugs really like white front ends! |
Front quarter view. As you can see from the decals on the doors, the 20th Anniversary Trans Am was the pace car for the 73rd Indianapolis 500. It was the only car that needed NO modifications (other than the light bar) to run the course. Note the cloisson badges for the TURBO TRANS AM and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway emblem. (Cloissons are physical badges, not decals). |
A previous owner added the deep tinting on the side and rear glass. While it looks cool from the outside, it was illegal and rather annoying on the inside. The sides were grey, but the rear was deep purple. Dave found a "rice" shop that specializes in removing and installing tinting. They did a great job - got it all off without ruining the rear window defogger! This is a good view of the gold wheels. |
The rear view. From the factory, it had chrome dual-dual (sideways) exhaust tips. At this time, she just had stainless dual outlets. Dave has replaced them with the dual-duals. Pictures to follow in the spring of 2002... The rear cloisson white 'bird and TURBOlogo were unique to the 20th Anniversary. Other GTAs and TA's were decals. |
Driver's side view at night. Notice that the TURBO cloisson is gold. In the earlier day shot it looked red. It is actually gold, but the light plays off of it in strange ways. This shot shows off the cloisson badges. The TURBO TA, Indy, and 20th Anniversary on the A pillar really set her apart. |
The rear view at night. Similar to the 1979 Trans Am, the blackout treatment of the rear end is highlighted by the flash. You can see the red and white of the tail and reverse lights through the smoke lens. The TURBO and Bird cloisson are really featured in this shot as well. |
The TTA Powerplant. While the badging and striping make her special on the outside, this is what really makes her unique. It is a Buick 3.8L Turbo engine, based on the Grand National engine. It has the better-breathing heads of the FWD 3800 engine, which fit better in the Trans Am. This along with the turbocharger and the larger intercooler from the GNX made this car a screamer. Seeing the look on people's faces when they think they are coming up on a typical 3rd generation TA and get smoked is priceless! Dave has since added a chromed turbo shield and inlet pipes. |
The cockpit of the TTA. It is a typical GTA dash with the radio controls on the steering wheel as standard equipment on the TTA. The only giveaway is the Turbo Boost gauge on the right side of the Tachometer circle cluster. These only came with a four speed automatic tranny, and cassette player. The Delco CD Player did not allow steering wheel controls. |
Dave's new vanity plate. I am surprised it was available! The best shot of the rear end cloisson and TURBO logo. |
