DEFINITIONS

NIH's R01 Mechanism is an award made to support a discrete, specified, circumscribed project to be performed by the named investigator(s) in an area representing the investigator's specific interest and competencies, based on the mission of the NIH. R01s can be investigator initiated or can be in response to a program announcement or request for application. More info on R01s at:
http://grants2.nih.gov/grants/funding/r01.htm

NIH's R21 Mechanism (non-renewable)- Reserved for high-risk research where this mechanism can be used to collect preliminary data. More info on R21s at:
http://grants2.nih.gov/grants/funding/r21.htm

NIH's R21/33 Mechanism (non-renewable)- Reserved for research where the high risk component occurs early.  The R33 component may involve implementation of the data collected during the R21 mechanism into an application or instrument.  It is expected that there be a working instrument or new technique.
