A movie this summer that no one really knows about. Not another sequel, but it is based on a comic book. A not very well known comic book. It has many characters based on books. Captain Nemo who mostly provides the transportation, Dorian Gray, the immortal from a painting, is a great sword fighter, Tom Sawyer (yes that one) is the American from the CIA who is a rapid fire shooter. Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde they see each other in mirrors and looks better than the hulk but is proportioned muscularly weird. Nina Harker from Dracula unleashes bats and bites peoples throats and was TV’s Le Femme Nikkita, the invisible man (who is naked the whole time…) provides some humor, and Sean Connery is no one famous. He is living in Africa when the English government calls upon him. A guy known as the Phantom (Not of the opera) has fake German soldiers attack the English and fake English soldiers attack the Germans in order to create a world war. (Takes place in 1899). They all get together and meet “M”. I guess it’s like the M from James Bond. Who tells them the Phantom is going to sink Venice, where the worlds leaders are meeting to have a discussion about the attacks. They have four days to get there so they take Captain Nemo’s submarine. This was fun with a few laughs. The special effects sometimes were alright and others quite crappy. Make-up was good with Mr. Hyde done mostly like Fat Bastard. Action sequences are very exciting with sword fights, gun fights, and fist fights with slamming through rocks, and others. The invisible man puts crème on his face sometimes so people can see him. Sometimes he has it all around his head when he puts it only on his face and then its gone. It’s a bad history lesson with World War 1 wanting to start early, but its some fun. Cool twists keep things interesting. Casting was done well and everyone was good. Will we see sequel? There could be, there could not be, by the box office, who knows. It’s not great, but its good. GRADE: B SHOULD YOU SEE IT? If you run out of things to see |
