The Hart's |
On August 21, 2005 SGT. Patrick Hart, of the 101st Airborne Division, walked away from 9 and a half years of active service. Refusing to participate in an illegal war, SGT. Hart crossed over the Peace Bridge in Buffalo, NY, and came to Canada. |
Jill Hart, Patrick's wife, had no idea of her husband's intentions to desert the Army. She was living on Fort Campbell when Patrick called her, while on a weekend pass, to tell her he wasn't coming home. Mrs. Hart was currently the HSC 9-101st ASB Family Readiness Group Leader, working with the Company Commander to prepare soldier's families for the deployment to Iraq. |
Jill and her son joined Patrick in Canada on September 18, 2005. |
"A journey of the longest duration starts with but a single step" |
During the period of 1965-1973, more than 50,000 Americans made their way to Canada, refusing to participate in an immoral war. At the time, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau said: "Those who make a conscientious judgment that they must not participate in this war...have my complete sympathy, and indeed our political approach has been to give them access to Canada. Canada should be a refuge from militarism." Thirty years later, Canada is faced with the same moral choice-to give refuge to those who refuse to be complicit in the US-led war on Iraq, which many legal opinions have deemed illegal under international law.
