3D Poems! - Internet Interactive poetry! What is a 3D-poem? A 3D-poem is a poem on the internet that allows for reader interaction, such as hyperlinks, sound and/or vision options. How are they different from traditional poems? The traditional form of written poetry is restricted to the two dimensional aspect of the surface on which the poem is written. The reader has a limited two way interaction with the poem. A 3D-poem has the additional advantage of internet interactivity. This means the reader is able to have extra choices to the way in which they interact with the poem. They might be able to choose to read more detail about a word or phrase, or to explore additional aspects of the poem, or related themes. The electronic medium of the internet also means that the reader can interact with sound and/or visual elements of the poem. These additional interactive elements of the internet poem are what give them the advantage of another dimension of reader participation. Who invented them? TJ McGowan (aka MrsMyth) pioneered the idea in 1993 by applying the existing contemporary technology to poems. The internet had been used in interactive ways for web-site readers, and bankers etc, so why not use it for poetry, too. In 1994 TJ McGowan first coined the phrase '3D-poems' to describe interactive internet poems. Now poets have a new way to communicate with, and engage, their readers, too. |
