Residential Staff Member at Charles Sturt University, Bathurst, 1990, 1991

The role

For two years I was a Residential Staffmember at Charles Sturt University, Bathurst. This involved being part of a team of Staff who lived in residence at the University.
I was responsible for the welfare, safety, and the academic and administrative support services of fifty University students. I was responsible for the overall supervision of the domitory and the welfare of the 25 students who lived within that dormitory. Within this role I was required to comfort distressed students, advise and assist with academic information, assist in emergency first aid, help with the decision making and organisation of the entire "John Oxley Village" residence (approximately 250 students), develop and implement appropriate people management skills, maintain suitable health and discipline procedures within the dormitory, and promote friendships and the development of community living.

Training
Part of the training for the position included;
-Counselling and student welfare skills training,
-regular team meetings and administrative information,
-acquiring an upgraded drivers license to drive the 16-seater residential bus,
-Fire-extinguisher training,
-St John's Advanced first Aid certificate.
