Silent Letters

Something happened just last night.
I re
alised with a dreadful fright;
Of al
l the silent letters known,
ther
e's one, I feel, that stands alone.
Of al
l the silent letters used,
ther
e's one that seems the most abused.
This let
ter seems a little haughty,
w
hen in the hands of someone naughty...

G
hetto, gherkin, Ghan, or ghastly;
get to work. Can I say lastly,
it w
ouldn't stand the chance of a ghost,
becaus
e the silent letter most
is not the silent one in 'g
houl'.
It's not the on
e we know in school.
It is in g
houl and ghost and Ghan,
but let me stat
e it if I can.
Forget the "H". Bel
ieve you me,
the silent sc
oundrel is a "G".

It's found in words lik
e gnat and gnaw
It's also in a
whole lot more.
It's nic
e in gneiss, and neat in gnome.
In
gnomon it has made a home.
It's in a word that I find comic;
Wis
e and pithy truths are 'gnomic'.
'
Gnostic' means that you have knowledge.
For '
gnosis' go to gospel college.
Another word w
hich may be new;
long horn
ed antelope - the 'Gnu".

My silent let
ter theory grew;
Is ther
e nothing "G" can't do?
But then oc
curred another thing;
It's only partly he
ard in 'string'.
'Singing' yet another word
w
here neither "G" is fully heard.
G's q
uiet again in gnarled and gnash,
but don't be hasty; don't be rash,
'coz "G" can't always be so q
uiet,
or ther
e would be a language riot!

Imagin
e if a plan was hatched
that let
ter "G" would be despatched.
We'd let it go. We'd cut it loos
e.
We'd ri
ght it off. No more for use.

But just as I _limps
ed this _olden _leam
a _rim thou_
ht _utted my _lorious dream.
The thou_
ht was _ross and truly heinous ...
What would we call poor Aunty Agnus?!
