Time to pass (To the tune of Waltzing matilda) Once a jolly nation sang a national song with pride; sadly an anthem of sorrow and vice. This national song was a tale of theft and suicide; Singing of such is both strange and not nice. Won't sing Matilda, I won't sing Matilda. I'll not be singing Matilda, you see because this national song is a tale of theft and suicide, Who'll come not singing Matilda with me? As a piece of poetry, banjo wrote a ripper yarn, but as an anthem it really is wrong. Our national patriotic Aussie pride deserves to ask ... Is it the best we can do for a song? Won't sing Matilda, I won't sing Matilda. I'll not be singing Matilda, you see because this national song is a tale of theft and suicide, Who'll come not singing Matilda with me? As a story for kids or a lesson on historic past, Andrew Barton Paterson has done a great job. But why it's sung at national sporting venues is completely mad, we owe more to teams, like our Wallaby mob. Won't sing Matilda, I won't sing Matilda. I'll not be singing Matilda, you see because this national song is a tale of theft and suicide, Who'll come renouncing Matilda with me? Our national sports teams deserve a a decent stirring song. We don't have to live witha sad song of vice. Some sort of song that contains themes that will make us proud. How can we fix things? Well, here's my advice ... Don't sing Matilda, Don't sing Matilda. Who'll come not singing Matilda with me? because this national song is a tale of theft and suicide, Who'll come renouncing Matilda with me? So, bring it on, all you writers, musoes, poets too; we want a song with some real Aussie dreams. Make it inspiring, with stuff of which we can be proud, bundle it up in muchmore modern themes. Don't sing Matilda, Don't sing Matilda. Who'll come a waltzing a new song with me? And we'll sing and we'll write and we'll come up with a better song, Who'll come a waltzing a new song with me? |
