Classroom Library

Our classroom library is a very important part of our classroom and students' growth.  Students are allowed to choose books from our classroom library when they arrive in the morning, once their morning work is finished.  They may also exchange books when they finish a class assignment early.

I label each book with my last name using a Sharpie permanent marker.  Then, I separate my books into categories.  I separate according to series, topic, author...whatever!!  Then I place a color coding sticker (with a one, two, or three letter code) in the top corner of each book.  The books with the same code and sticker are then placed into a book bin (I use the clear, plastic shoe boxes you can get from Walmart or Dollar Tree).  I affix a label to the outside of each with the name of the category and an example of what the coding sticker looks like.

I add a library card pocket to the back of each book along with a library card.  Students can "check out" books by removing the library card from the back of the book, adding their names and today's date to the card, and then placing it into the pocket chart I use for checkout.  Here are the pockets (envelopes cut in half) and cards (3x5 index cards) I made on my computer, along with the templates so you can make your own:
