This unit is really suitable for a first grade class but may be adapted to pre-k or kindergarten. It includes the study of polar bears, black bears, brown bears, and the Panda Bear. We will learn many facts about bears including when and how bears hibernate in winter. Some of the concepts and skills introduced in this unit are listed below: Listening Skills Language Development Math Skills Science Concepts Literarature and Poetry Writing Skills Activities Make a bear shape book. Listen to the story "Buddy's High Flying Adventure" as the teacher reads it aloud. Science Activity: Color and cut out a paper balloon to see if it will fly or spin. Find out what happens if you add paper clips. (Pattern for this in Whole Language Theme Unit Primary, Bears, Grades 1-2, Instructional Fair, Inc.) Make bear stick puppets. Allow students to get into small groups and make up their own skit or play using their bear puppets. Allow each student to form a boat out of tin foil. Float the boat in a water table to see whose boat will hold the most bears without sinking. Put Teddy Bear stationery into a writing center and let students make up their own bear stories. Set up a math center for learning addition facts and add Teddy Bear Counters. To culminate our activites, we will have a Teddy Bear picnic with "bear snacks".
