Task III: Ginsberg's "America"
Below is a link to Allen Ginsberg's poem "America" written in 1956. Included among the group of writers known as The Beats, Ginsberg (who died in 1997) was a writer and political activist. Rebelling against the repressive norms of the 1940's and 50's Ginsberg was amongst a group of artist who embodied the instict toward social revolution that defined the 1960's. Read this poem with "Doctorow's Disneyland" and Daniel in mind. Pick a single word (or two) or a phrase on which you think the entire poem rests. What is critical about those words or that phrase? Why do you feel it gets at the heart of the poem?
