Task IV: Defining Our Terms | ||||||
In Task III you were asked to pick a word or phrase that you felt was at the heart of Ginsberg's poem "America." My choice was "I'm sick of your insane demands." What "insane demands" do you think Ginsberg is referring too? Are there societal demands today you would dub "insane?" Define in two paragraphs (one for this phrase and one for the word or phrase you have choosen) Ginsberg's words. Using your thoughts for the first two paragraphs write a third paragraph that explains (defines) the mood of the poem. Is the poem stark raving mad? Or is it just angry? Or Sad? Joking? A mixed mood? Define the mood with a phrase of your own and be precise with your language. If you mean furious don't say "mad." This phrase should appear in your third paragraph topic sentence i.e. "This is a poem in which Ginsberg is ...." or "Blah Blah Blah is an appropriate description of the mood of Ginsberg's "America." |
