Not only is the body an important symbol of the state in Macbeth, but great attention is drawn to the senses as well. We know seeing and interpretation loom large in the play because Macbeth's interpretation of the his visions are what determine his course of action. We also know Macbeth's eyes fail him as he misinterprets the visions at the caldrun, and further yet, that he struggles with his vision throughout the play in the form of hallucinations. He sees a dagger floating before him and then the ghost of Banquo. To experience a little of Macbeth's struggle, listen to the following recording of the, "is this a dagger which I see before me speech" (up to about minute 3 on this recording). The link is to a page of recordings, you must scroll down to Shakespeare's Macbeth. Follow along in your text and count or mark the number of times you see a reference to sight, seeing, vision etc.. Also, mark any references to the witches. |
