Geneticists still cannot decide on exactly which or how many genes control appaloosa spotting. Blanket mares may have leopard foals, and vice versa, leading to a "leopard complex" theory. Many mule foals from appy mares have no color at all. Some have odd blankets, many are wildly spotted, most are LOUD and the pattern skewed.
