So much has happened in Polish history that
has threatened to destroy the very
core of the Polish spirit; yet through it all, the Poles
have perservered and preserved their rich culture. Religion
sustained the people through difficult times and is very entwined with
holiday celebrations. Of special importance is Our
Lady of Czestochowa, Poland's patron saint. The Poles also
fondly revere Saint
Queen Jadwiga, the young queen who accomplished so much in her
short lifetime.
Folk art flourishes and is kept alive by skilled native artists. The colorful costumes of years gone by are worn by folk dancers and at various festivals throughout the year. The beautiful tradition of sharing Oplatek on Christmas Eve is practiced by Poles world-wide and Dyngus, the ancient Easter Monday custom of splashing water or perfume on unsuspecting victims has been enthusatically retained by the younger generation. The collection of costumes, customs and crafts I've presented here is small, but it is hoped that visitors will enjoy these pages. |
