"O you who believe! When you rise up for prayer, wash your face, and your hands up to the elbows, and lightly rub your heads and (wash) your feet up to the ankles"
[Surah al-Ma’idah, 5:6]

Before we can begin to perform Salah, we must first prepare ourselves. This preparation includes making sure that we are clean from physical impurity, and this is done by carrying out Wudu. Wudu is the minor purification. The major form of purification is called Ghusl. If water is not available, the purification can be performed with clean earth or soil, and is called Tayammum.

Wudu (Ablution) is essential for performing Salah. We cannot offer our Salah without first making Wudu. These are the steps to take:

HOW TO MAKE WUDU
1
Make niyyah (intention) for Wudu in your heart
Make Niyyah. Start by saying:

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim

(In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Kind)
2
Then wash both hands up to the wrists (starting with the right hand) three times making sure that water has reached between the fingers.
3
Put a handful of water into your mouth and rinse it thoroughly three times.
4
Sniff water into your nostrils three times to clean them and blow it out, washing the tip of the nose.
5
Wash your face three times from right ear to left ear and from forehead to throat.
6

Wash your right arm and then your left arm thoroughly from wrist up to elbow three times.

7
Then move the wet palms lightly over the head, starting at the top of forehead to the back of the head, and then bringing them back to the forehead again.
8
Clean the ears. Pass the wet tips of index fingers into the grooves and holes of both ears and also pass the wet thumbs behind the ears. From bottom of the ear upwards.
9
Pass the back of the wet hands over the nape of the neck.

10
Finally, wash both feet to the ankles three times starting from the right, making sure that water has reached between the toes and all other parts of the feet.
11
Make Du'a
At the end of the above steps recite:

أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَإِلَهَ إِلَّا اللّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ ، وَ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدً اعَبْدُهُ وَ رَسُولُهُ

Ash-hadu an la ilaha illal lahu wa ash-hadu anna Muammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh.

(I testify that there is no god but Allah and He is One and has no partner and I also testify that Muhammad is His servant and messenger).
[Muslim 1:209, Abu Dawud, an-Nisai, Tarteeb Shareef pg. 469]

Allahummaj 'alni min at-tawwabeen waj'alni min al-mutatahhireen

(O Allah! Make me one of those who repent and make me one of those who are clean.)
[at-Tirmidhi 1:78]

(Glory be to You, O Allah, and Praise; I bear witness that there is no god but You, I seek Your forgiveness and I repent to You.)
[Sunan an-Nasa'i, 'Amal al-Yawm wal-Lailah]

During wudu, you can recite this dua:

اَللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذَنْبِيْ ، وَوَسعْ لِيْ فِيْ دَارِيْ ، وَ بَارِكْ لِي فِيْ رِزْقِيْ

Allahummaghfirli dhanbi, wa wassi’li fee daari, wa barik lee fi rizqi

(O Allah! Forgive my sins, grant me expansion in my home and bless my livelihood.)
[at-Tirmidhi]

Fards in Wudu:

1. To wash the face once
2. To wash the two arms together with the elbows once.
3. To apply masah (wiping of head with wet hands) on the one-fourth of the head, that is, to rub a wet hand softly on it.
4. Washing both feet, together with the ankles once.

Fresh wudu is needed after:

1. Natural discharge (e.g. urine, stool, wind and the like)
2. Flow of blood or pus from any part of the body.
3. Full mouth vomiting
4. Falling asleep.
