Swing Songs
The History of Swing Music:
Swing music dates back to the 1920s. The black community discovered the Charleston and Lindy Hop while dancing to contemporary jazz music. During the 1930s and 1940s, swing music reached its peak during the Big Band era. In 1927, the Savoy Ballroon was opened and here the Lindy Hop and many more types of swing were born.
In the mid 1930s, Cab Calloway introduced a bouncy 6 beat song entitled "
Jitterbug" and the Jitterbug was formed. Then, in 2005 at Mission Viejo High School, a group of friends founded the Jitterbug Club, and the rest is history.
The Shim Sham!
The Shim Sham is a Lindy line dance. it is a mix of swing, jazz, and tap, but is not too hard to learn. It is danced to the song, "Stomping at the Savoy." We have been learning this dance during meetings and it is a lot of fun.
