Lammas The first picked fruits, The sheaves of grain, The God of light begins to wane. The waxing Goddess of the Earth, The abundance of her birth. We enjoy First fruits this day Two more harvests are on the way John Barleycorn, we call your name, John Barleycorn, King of the grain, John Barleycorn, step into the flame, So that the crops will be blessed again. |
Wicker man, John Barleycorn and Corn man are all reprsentations of the Great Grain God, who is sacrified at the Havest festivals beginning with Beltaine then Lammas, Mabon and finalley Samhain for the ensurance of healthy crops in the coming year. An effigy of a man is made from the straws of the grain and burned in the bonfire during the celebration. I chose to burn wicker man at Lammas because it's a major sabbat without much other activity. For those of us who haven't the privilege of a bonfire, the cauldron will do nicely. |
