Potential Topics of Discussion for the Montana History Discussion List

THE COPPER COLLAR
It has been suggested that from ca. 1882 until the late 1970s, Montana was "owned and operated" by the Anaconda Copper Company. The Company, headquartered for much of its existence on Wall Street, exercised great control over Montana’s economic, political and social life. Your thoughts on this episode of the state’s history?

VEGETARIAN OR CARNIVORE
The life and times of John Johnson, a.k.a. Liver Eatin’ Johnson

A UNIQUE FORM OF POPULISM
While the Populism throughout the West and the South has been characterized as be largely rural and agrarian, in Montana it has been suggested the Populists drew their support from more urban area. Montana Populists were a curious mix of mine owners and mine workers who banded together under the Populist banner to support such common interests as the Free Silver Movement.

PARTISAN POLITICS
It has been suggested that a large and influential segment of Montana’s Non-Native American population during the 1860s was comprised of "Southern Sympathizers" and members of the Democrat Party. What effect did this have on politics in Montana during the territorial years? Relations between the (often Republican) appointed territorial governors and the largely Democratic territorial legislative assembly? Did Montana’s adherence to the Democrat Party impede it entry into the Union as a state?

AFRICAN-AMERICANS
At the dawn of the 20th century Montana was home to a substantial number of African-Americans. Many Blacks in Butte and Helena owned their own homes and businesses. There were African Methodist Episcopal Churches in Butte, Helena, Bozeman, Great Falls and other Montana communities. By the 1920s the very few African-American were to be found in Montana. The causes for this exodus of Blacks from the state? Jim Crow Laws (anti-miscegenation laws at the state level, de facto desegregation at the local level) ? Economics?
