Monday, September 9 - It's hard to believe that summer vacation is over but here we are getting into the groove of a new school year. Lauren and I spent the last 2 weeks of August in the city for round 12 of antibodies. This round really wasn't too bad pain wise. The problem we're having now is keeping an IV. Lauren's veins are so "tired" that her lines are blowing left and right. It took two or three tries to get one in the first day then it wound up blowing by Thurs morning and it took 9 tries to get another one. I told them they had one try left and after that I was "opting out" of antibodies for that day. Thankfully the last try worked. I felt so bad for Lauren, she was a real trooper though as we couldn't use emla (numbing cream) because they had no idea where to find a good vein. We're due back Oct 14 - 25 & I'm already dreading it. Thankfully we have only 3 rounds left before our 2 years are up. Socially Lauren had a great time this round. She met up with a few old friends and made a bunch of new ones. Because the weather was so nice RMH had a lot of BBQ's out on the terrace with lots of games and stuff for the kids and good food for all. Lauren got to play with some of her favorite volunteers. They are always so glad to see her. We took a fun trip one night on a FDNY fire boat. The firemen took us up the river to the Staue of Liberty and back for about an hour ride. The kids loved it. Lauren had a little trouble walking straight once the boat started moving - it was pretty funny to watch. Everyone would laugh when she would say Whoaaaa! She had a turn at driving the boat (which in her words was "pretty cool") and they let her try on the firemen gear. She only kept it on for a minute because it was so heavy it almost knocked her over. I did manage to get one picture so hopefully it will come out good. Another fun thing Timmy and Lauren got to do was meet Roger Clemens (NY Yankees pitcher). He came in to RMH Friday afternoon and read a story to the kids then signed balls and bats for them. Timmy was very excited. Lauren on the other hand was more impressed with another big name that showed up - Ronald McDonald! She made sure she got his autograph too. As much fun as we have when we are in the city, it's always nice to be back home. As soon as we got home Friday, Lauren and I headed to the Henry's house where Timmy was for Logan's birthday party. Her big concern was that she would get there in time to go swimming, which we did, even though it was only 70 degrees out! Then on Saturday afternoon I took Lauren up to my sister's house so she could have a sleepover with Aunt Nean's dogs - all 5 of them! Of course she had a ball. She called me in the morning to tell me how much they all loved her and how they licked her and kissed her, especially Chloe and Molson who slept in her bed with her all night. On Sunday Aunt Nean and Uncle Dylan took her to the dog show at the fairgrounds where she got to see her one of her favorite friends - Bravo (and Corey & Leslie too :-) ) and also a little puppy named Frankie (who was oh so cute!) She had a lot of fun and was pretty well exhausted when they got home. We spent this past weekend down at Grandma & Pop Pop's house. We had one more place to visit on Lauren's "World Passport" - Six Flags Great Adventure which is only 30 minutes from there. Timmy hadn't been there since he was about 4 and Lauren had never been so we took them on Saturday. We all had a great time. Timmy was a little disappointed because he was a hair too short for most of the big super duper roller coasters. (The minimun height was 54 inches and he is just about 53 1/2! Whew! I have one more year) He was mad I buzzed his hair last week! He did enjoy a bunch of other rides though especially the water ones as did Lauren. She's getting braver by the day. Two of the rides were big flumes with a pretty hefty drop - if the lines weren't so long she would have done them again and again! She says she can't wait to go back next year. We relaxed at the house yesterday and of course the kids went swimming in Aunt Eileen's pool. Both Timmy and Lauren already love school. Timmy started last Wednesday and Lauren's first day was today. She even rode the bus home this afternoon. She told me - "I'm a big girl now...I can handle it". We ended up with a visit to the doctor's this afternoon to check out Timmy's finger that he hurt playing football yesterday. We were sent for an xray and thankfully it wasn't broken. Well, I'm going to end here as I have to get ready for another busy day tomorrow. Lauren has PT in the morning then, finally, the long awaited first day of Dance class! She is so excited to get her tap and ballet shoes! Tomorrow is also Timmy's first day of soccer practice (with their first game on Saturday!) As always, thanks for checking in on us. We greatly appeciate all of the good thoughts and prayers you've been sending our way. |
