SLAVERY EQUIPMENT

Gorean slavery is a major institution and many items have been created to aid in its practice. Many of these items were invented to fill a need of the Slavers and others were developed simply for any slave owner.

anchor ring: This is a steel ring, also known as a slave ring, found on floors, walls, ceilings and furniture. The metal is about one inch in diameter thick. It is a secure spot where a slave girl can be chained or bound to it. There are usually public anchor rings in most cities, including in paga taverns. Most Gorean stone couches, their beds, have anchor rings. Even a Free Companion might sometimes find herself chained to such a ring. It may be as punishment or simply to remind her that she is a woman and thus to be dominated.
ankle rack: This is a wooden rack like a set of stocks. There are semi-circular openings in the top and bottom blocks. They are hinged at the left and secured on the right with a staple and hasp. In Schendi, this rack may be used to aid in cutting off a slave's feet as punishment. The rack is placed up so the victim dangles below, holding herself up with her palms on the ground. A scimitar might then be used for the cutting.
belly chain: This chain fits around a girl's waist and cannot be removed because of a girl's wide hips. There is a heavy padlock at the girl's back. In the front of the chain is a heavy medallion-like metal disk with kef on it.
binding fiber: This is commonly stout twine made of strips of leather or of a fiber like hemp. A piece is usually long enough to circle a slave girl's waist two or three times. It is often used as a belt for her slave tunic. It may also be used to tie a girl, as a leash, or even as a whip. It has been designed for the perfect control of slaves and prisoners.
blind fold: This item commonly consists of three pieces. There are two rounded pieces of soft felt, three to four inches indiameter, for the eyes. There is also a binding, which consists of two or more turns of a dark, thick, folded cloth or scarf. It is seldom used in transporting slaves as the slave hood is more common for that. It is easier to dislodge than a slave hood but a blindfold allows the mouth to be seen, kissed and touched which a hood does not.
body chain: This is a chain loop, about five feet long, and is made to loop a woman's throat several times or by alternative windings to bedeck her body in various fashions. The chain is not heavy but it is not light either. It has a solid heft in one's hand. It is closely meshed and strong enough so it can be used as slave security. It may also be decorated with wooden beads, semiprecious stones and bits of leather. Attached to the chain, but are detachable, are two sets of clips. There is a pair of snap clips and one of lock clips. The clips turn the chain from jewelry to a sturdy and effective slave restraint.
branding rack: This is a device to which a new slave girl is chained for branding. Her hands are chained above her head and the thigh to be branded is held motionless in a large vise. The girl is laid back over a curved of metal and her ankles are shackled. The rack can be used to brand either thigh.
capture scent: This is a liquid like chloroform. It is used to sedate, immediately, a person who is forced to breathe it. It is commonly soaked in a rag and held over the nose and mouth will render a woman unconscious in five Ihn. She will squirm wildly for an Ihn or two and then sluggishly and then fall limp. Anesthetic darts are sometimes used though they take forty Ihn to work.
collar: This is a number of different types of devices that are made to fit around the neck of a slave. The most common varieties are made of iron or steel. They are usually a light band, flat and snugly fitting, that locks in the back. They range from simple iron bands to ornate, bejeweled collars. They have two basic items in common, they cannot be removed by the girl and they mark her as a slave. A collar also usually identifies her master and city. The most common sizes for collars are the ten to twelve hort sizes. These collars may be opened by the use of a key. The collar lock is a pin lock with six pins, one for each of the letters in the word "kajira."

Some collars may be enameled in different collars, more as a decorative matter. A collar stocking, or sleeve, is a covering for a collar that is made of different materials such as silk or in cooler climates velvet. They are an accessory to enhance a girl's beauty though they are not used in most cities.

Most male slaves have a simple iron band hammered onto their necks and riveted shut. They cannot be removed. In Torvaldsland, their collars are similar. They are made of iron and are hinged and then fastened with a rivet. The Turian collar is a round, hinged ring. It lies loosely on a slave but not so loose that she can get out of it. If a man holds the collar, the girl can turn around in it. It is harder to engrave though than a normal collar. A plate collar has two narrow, straight bars of iron, about fifteen inches long and half an inch wide. A blacksmith curves the iron about a slave's throat with his hammer over an anvil. A space of a quarter of an inch is left between the two ends of the collar.
dancing chain: There are many varieties of this chain. Commonly it is a long, light chain with two wrist rings. The chain goes to each wrist ring and also to the collar. The chain will then hang down to about the knees. The purpose of this chain is not to confine the girl but to allow her to incorporate it in her dance. Another type is the oval and collar, a traditional one in the Tahari region. A girl kneels, head down, in a large oval of light gleaming chain, extending her wrists before her. Fastened at the sides of the top of the oval are two wrist rings. At the sides of the lower loop of the oval are two ankle rings. The oval is then pulled inward and the wrist and ankle rings fastened on her. Her throat is then fastened in the dancing collar which has under the chin an open snap ring. With the left hand, the oval is then gathered together so the two strands of chain lie in the palm of the left hand. They are then placed inside the snap ring which is then snapped shut and locked. The two strands of chain flow freely. The wrists are about a yard apart and the ankles eighteen inches.
gag: There are many varieties of slave gags. They include ball-gags, and metal and leather lock gags. A common type has a wadding of a metal sphere, usually covered with leather, through which passes a metal locking bar or strap. This is a ratchet-and-pawl arrangement that allows these to be fitted exactly. There are two general size ranges, a larger one for men and a smaller one for women though they are seldom worn by men. Such a gag cannot be removed even if the hands are free.
girl-capture chain: This is like a garrote in many respects. It has a narrow golden chain that will choke without cutting the throat. Obviously you do not want to injure the girl. You can adjust it by spinning one of the wooden handles and thus controlling it with one hand.
gyves: This is an archaic Earth term for a fetter or shackle, especially for the leg.
hook bracelets: These are leather cuffs with locks and snaps on them. They are soft and the snaps require no key. By means of the snaps, the girl may be variously secured by the locked cuffs. These items may be used in the pleasure alcoves of paga taverns.
iron belt: This is a Gorean chastity belt. There are many varieties of this belt but the following is a plain type. It basically consists of two major pieces. One is a rounded, fitted, and curved waistband, flattened at the ends. One end of this band, the right side, has a heavy, semicircular ring or staple welded onto it. The other flattened end has a slot in it which fits over the staple. The other major portion of the belt consists of a curved band of flat, shaped iron. One end of this flat band curves and closes about the barlike waistband in the front. This produces a hinge. The flat, U-shaped strap of iron swings on this hinge. On the other end of this flat band is a slot that fits over the same staple as the other slot. It can then be fitted on the girl and then locked with a padlock. Iron belts are the primary protection for girls wandering city streets from unauthorized slave rape.
Leashes The common leash has a lock snap and closes about a collar or collar ring. There are also wrist and ankles leashes. Leashes are very versatile. Some use them only to tether a girl while others use them as leading devices, especially in cities and crowds. Most slave leashes are long enough so they can also serve as a lash. Many leashes are cored with wire so a girl cannot chew through them. A good leash is not an impediment to a girl's breathing though there is a choke leash that will strangle a girl if she tries to resist it. There is even a specific leash collar. It is high and sturdy with two buckle fastenings. There is an iron ring on a riveted plate where you attach the leash. The plate may be located in the front or back depending on whether you want the girl in front of you or behind you.
manacles: Manacles, also known as slave bracelets, are used for wrists and ankles and are commonly fixed-ring sized. There are four numbers in the series. One is small, two and three are normal, and four is large. Most manacles are adjustable for any of the four sizes. Though ankle rings use the same numbers as wrist rings, they are actually larger. For example, a size two ankle ring has an interior circumference of seven horts but a size two wrist ring is only five horts. Most men prefer the sizes of wrist and ankle manacles to match. Male slave sizes are numbered similarly but they use a different scale.
nets: A variety of nets are used in the capturing of slaves. Capture nets are used for individual slaves. They are circular, strongly woven, and weighted for ease of throwing. Wall nets are large enough to block a path of escape and capture a small group of people. Even sleen nets may be used to capture slaves. Nets though are used mostly in rural areas and not in the cities
pleasure rack: This device, ranges in complexity from a grid of ropes in a wooden frame to a moveable, adjustable frame with chains. It is used for the display and sexual use of slave girls and captive free women. One type has adjustable strap racks, with beddings of flat, soft, criss-crossed straps. The holding straps are adjustable and no buckles are used. There are also simple net racks, little more than sturdy wooden frames within which is slung a netlike webbing of rope. Not all racks are comfortable for the women. The more sophisticated racks have various various gears, pinions, braces, sliding boards, notches and lock points, so they can be adjusted to a wide variety of positions.
sirik: This is an arrangement of chains used to display a slave girl rather than confine her. It consists of a collar, wrist and ankle manacles and a length of chain. The chain is ten to twelve inches longer than is needed to reach from her collar to her ankles The sirik is graceful and designed to enhance beauty. It can also serve as a leash. The chain widths are adjustable to adjust latitude of movement. There is a work sirik that is like the common sirik but the wrists are granted about a yard of chain so she has the freedom of movement to work.
slave bells: These bells are used to enhance the desirability of a slave. They are most often put on by men and very rarely by slaves. They are almost always put on or removed by one who has authority over the slave. They are usually worn only by Pleasure Slaves and the customarily for dancing. It is common to bell paga slaves. Most girls walk proudly in their bells and know how to wear their bells to drive their masters crazy with passion.
slave box: This is commonly a low steel rectangular box, about four feet long, three feet wide and eighteen inches deep. It opens from the top. At each end of the lid is a circle about five inches in diameter of penny-sized holes for air to enter the box. It is locked and secured by two flat steel bars, perpendicular to its long axis, padlocked in front in place. The exterior is enameled white with a red kef on it, either cursive or block to signify the sex of the slave inside. Male boxes are slightly larger. The boxes have two sets of rings on top through with long carrying poles are put so that male work slaves can carry it.
slave dip: Slaves are immersed in this liquid, shortly after debarkation of a ship, to avoid parasites. The rules of many port authorities also require this.
slave girdles: These are simply belts to tie around clothes to accent a figure. There are various ways to tie them and it is said that only men know how to tie them properly. They may even be used to bind a girl if needed.
slave goad: This is like a tarn goad but designed for humans. It has a switch and a dial. The intensity of the goad can range from distinctly unpleasant to instantly lethal. It is unknown in most cities and almost never used except by professional slavers. This is probably because of the great expense involved. It emits a shower of yellow sparks when it touches an object. At its Kill Point, it glows very hot and is hard to look at.
slave hobble: This is a chain consisting of a wrist ring and an ankle ring, joined by about seven inches of chain. It is fastened on one ankle and then the opposite wrist. Even if a girl kneels, it is not uncomfortable.
slave hood: Most hoods are heavy, opaque, and can be locked. They may or may not have a gag attachment. Some hoods are simply sacks with drawstrings. They are more effective than a blindfold as a security device as they are much harder to remove by a girl. But, you cannot see a girl's face in them. There is a half hood though which does allow the mouth to be revealed. It is a compromise between the blindfold and the full slave hood.
slave oval: This is a hinged iron loop which locks on a girl's waist. Two wrist rings, on sliding loops, are fitted on the oval. The oval has a welded ring on the back through which a slave bolt may be snapped, fastening a girl to a wall or object, or through which a chain might be passed.
slave sack: This is also called a body hood and several varieties exist. Most are made of leather or layers of stout canvas. They may be fastened by cords, straps, laces or locks. It is a common form of light punishment to be put in one. It makes her feel helpess and keeps her unaware of her location. Most sacks are usually stout enough to hold a man.
slave steel : This is a generic term for the metalware worn by slaves, including chains, collars, chains, manacles and such.
slave strap: This is a heavy strap that buckles in the back. At the belly, there is a plate and ring. A five-inch chain passes through the ring and at each end of the chain is a wrist manacle.
slave trap: This is like a trap used in hunting animals. It has curved jaws with heavy, sharp steel teeth. It is not held by a heavy spring as a man might be able to open it. It can only be opened with a key.
slave tube: This is a device to force feed a slave and is not a pleasant device. It consists of a cylindrical, truncated cushion, usually of cork or leather, with a circular hole in its center. It is forced into a slave's mouth and a tube is inserted into the center hole. The cushion prevents the slave from biting the tube. The tube goes down to the stomach. There is a funnel at the end of the tube into which liquid is usually poured. If a special plunger is also used, semi-solid food like slave gruel or hash, may be given.
slave whistle: This item is used in issuing signals, summoning slaves, training slaves, etc.
slave wire: This is like barbed wire. It is a closely interwoven latticework of sharp, swaying strands. They are numerous and closely set, at intervals of less than a hort. It has barbs and knifelike prongs.
stimulation cage: This is an ornately barred, low-ceilinged cage. It is rather roomy but the ceiling is only about five feet high. It is designed to make the girl extremely conscious of men. She may not meet a man's eyes until she is sold. The cage has cosmetics and jewelry but no clothes. There are also many rugs, cloths and silks in the room. This is to raise a girl's sensitivity to her body and senses.
Tassa powder: This is a reddish powder, usually mixed with red wine, which renders the consumer unconscious. It is tasteless but would show up in water due to its color. It is sometimes used by slavers. It is potent enough to knock out men as well as women. There is nothing to indicate in the books that you can kill someone by using too much powder.
Thumb cuffs: These are light items and take up little space. They lock only the thumbs together and some feel they are less secure than bracelets. They may also be painful if too tight. A girl could hurt herself it she becomes hysterical so they should only be used while supervised.
Turian slave bar: This is a metal bar with a collar at each end. Behind the collar are manacles which fasten the hands behind the neck. It is used to hold two prisoners togethe
walking chains: These are used primarily in the Tahari. The chains tether the ankles and can be adjustable from two inches to twenty inches. A beautifully measured gait is thought to be attractive. Even Free women sometimes measure their stride, with either silk thongs or even the chain
whip: The common slave whip, also known as a kurt, has five broad, pliant straps. Each strap is about two and a half feet long and one and a half inches wide. The handle is eighteen inches long and has a loop on its butt end so it can be hung from a hook on the wall or on a belt. Though it may leave a welt, it doesn't permanently mark a victim. Other types of whips exist such as the one-bladed bosk whip and the snake. The snake is single-bladed whip, weighted, of braided leather. It is about eight feet long and half an inch to one inch thick. It is sometimes set with tiny particles of metal. It is a deadly whip and can easily strip flesh from the body. Men can die under this whip.
