Nostradamus foresaw the events of 11 September 2001 in the USA and expressed them magisterially in quatrain VI-97 of his Centuries, written in the mid 16th century. He "portrays" the events of that day and though he does not make any accusations, he gives the names of the two people considered today to be the main culprits of this tragedy, as well as indicating the efforts to extract the truth from them. Using spelling similar to that of those times, quatrain VI-97 says:

Cinc & quarante degrés ciel bruslera,
Feu approcher de la grand cité neufve,
Instant grand flamme esparse sautera,
Quand on voudra des Normans faire preuve.

For many years accepted "sentimentally" by many, but without any logical basis or justification of any nature, this verse is considered an account of the bombing of New York (
la grand cité neufve). But the idea is not supported by demanding analysts, since the city is not situated on parallel 45º, but rather very close to parallel 40º. And more, are those responsible for the bombs from northern France?
And yet, it is possible that this quatrain does in fact refer to the events of 11 September. This is what we will try to prove.
Attention: For the purpose of interpretation, it is the opinion of the specialists that Nostradamus' quatrains should not be translated or reproduced with changes in spelling. They should be studied from the originals
* or image copies of the first editions, taking into consideration, amongst other things, the deficient accentuation rules of that time. Unfortunately, this was not the case in this examination, which was based on transcribed copies, although said to be extremely faithful to the original. Evidently, the books that study the Centuries through translations into other languages, even from the French original, are perfect nonsense. This said, we will try to solve, better if not worse, the problems posed by this quatrain. Here is a free translation for information purposes and to obviate problems in understanding the French language:

Five & forty degrees the sky will burn,
Fire to approach the great new city,
(In an) Instant a great, scattered flame will leap up,
When one will want to demand proof of the Normans.

1st line -
Cinc & quarante degrés ciel bruslera

Cinc & quarante degrés - This part of the line, when not looking for any other meaning, is simple to interpret (45 degrees) but leads us no where, as has been said. Let us take note solely of the inversion in the sequence of the parts of the number: first the units and then the tens. We should be suspicious seeing that according to the experts, we can discover deep meanings even in the harmless-looking lines. And we have examples of the normal use of numbers in sequence, such as in V-98: A quarante huict degré climaterique - At forty eight degrees climatically (the author does not even use "&" or "et" between quarante and huict). Or in VI-2: En l'an cinq cens octante plus & moins - In the year five hundred and eighty more & less, meaning before and after the year five hundred and eighty and using the sign &, which does not present difficulty or traps in its interpretation.
