  In 1975 Nova's with console mounted Automatic the dash linkage for gear position is still connected, so you must put the shifter in Park to remove the key, which locks the steering wheel & transmission in park.

  In my 1977 Nova sedan with a 4-speed, you must put the transmission in reverse which moves linkage in the steering column to lock the transmission & the steering wheel to be able to get the key out.
