Tracy housing and education choices are limited by YRE Dear Editor, I have been looking to purchase larger home in Tracy, and after looking for a few weeks I have come to the conclusion that YRE (Year Round Education) is limiting housing choices here is Tracy. I have found several great houses that I like, but they are all stuck with YRE schools. If you are like me, the 60-70% of people that don't want their children on YRE, your housing choices in Tracy are limited. If you live west of Tracy Blvd. you are stuck with YRE. YRE is dividing the town. Most surveys find that only 30-35% of those on YRE really like it or want to be on it. Again, why isn't the TUSD board working to remove Tracy schools from YRE? Where's the plan to phase it out? This was only supposed to be temporary. One more point, regarding the proposed Tracy Learning Center (TLC). Did anyone ask the people that live or will live in the area between Corral Hollow rd and Lammers rd. if they want their children to go to a "visionary", experimental, K-12 school that runs a single track YRE calendar? Currently, parents make the choice to send their children to the Discovery Charter School (DCS), that's fine, but if the DCS becomes the TLC, the families in this area will be "railroaded" into this school and onto the YRE calendar with no options other than YRE. Seems to me that the TLC should be opened on the old Tracy High Campus as an alternative school. This should be done ONLY after the TUSD has provided enough seats in traditional schools and the TLC would be an option for families so inclined. Opening the TLC to be the substitute and the only option for thousands of children will only result in more parents revolting against the TUSD. Where's the trust? Thank you Bradley Hoskins Tracy, CA |
