Tracy Parents against MTYRE and YRE |
We again use the Tracy Unfied School District numbers to prove that Portables are less expensive than MTYRE Dear Trustees, WE have completed a new financial analysis USING THE NUMBERS PROVIDED BY TUSD in the the Bohn over crowding committee report This is our analysis below. We do question the costs of portables. TUSD SAYS $236,491 for a 960 square foot portable restroom !!! WHAT? $ 246 a foot for a prefab building ??? Saylor guide says more like 35-40 a foot, check for yourself www.saylor.com For illustration purposes, we use those numbers here: Using the San Diego analysis as a model, we do a 10 year analysis forLouis Bohn. Listed in order of total expenditures over TEN (10) years .Operational costs adjusted 4% per year for inflation. Listed in order of lowest cost (Options 2 and 3 are taken directly from the Bohn report, option 1 was added by us.) 1. Lease to own/ furnish/ operate portables on traditional schedule TOTAL over 10 years $ 1,258,322 Save $ 494,031 2. Purchase/furnish/operate portables on a traditional schedule TOTAL over 10 years $ 1,600,401 Save $ 151,952 3. Purchase portables and operate on MTYRE schedule TOTAL over 10 years $ 1,752,353 Save -0- Option one will save $ 494.031 over ten years when compared to MTYRE It is also clear that MTYRE is the costliest option and this analysis doesn't factor disruption, burnout and academic ill effects. Why do it? YRE disrupts families, has no academic benefit, and is costlier, why do it? It is clear that Lease to own is the way to go, the annual numbers fit into the budgets that TUSD would spend to operate Louis Bohn on an MTYRE schedule The TUSD would spend at least $ 306,536 up front to convert Bohn to MTYRE, we recommend that that money be used for the site work, fixtures and equipment to set up and equip the portable classrooms the costs for setting up the portables are below ( NOT JUST A SHELL) furniture allowance ( from TUSD numbers) $ 34,000 Slabs for all structures ( 6.00 per foot) $ 90,000 figures used from Saylor project estimating book www.saylor.com ) UNION wages Eelectrical, signal, plumbing, etc. $ 216,000 (electrical and signal conduits are already in place, go visit the school and see for yourself) total install costs $ 306,000 Will the local papers or the board please hire someone to do an outside analysis, ala the SanDiego report? Don't take our or the TUSD staff word for it. It is clear they have an agenda to convert all schools to YRE, regardless of cost. In the July 22, 2001 issue of the Tri Valley Herald, Dr Larick stated that he wants all schools in Tracy on a YRE schedule. This runs counter to what the board members have stated to us. The board members have told us that YRE is a temporary solution and in a few years, we would be reading about the schools in Tracy reverting to a Traditional schedule. This will not happen if Dr. Larick gets his way. He has stated that Traditional education is a relic of the agarian days. This statement is a common mistake. If the Traditional calendar was based on farming needs, the kids would be out of school in the spring for planting and in the fall for harvest. No, the reason kids are off in the summer is that they need to time to grow and learn in an unstructured environment. Parents against MTYRE and YRE |
