THE SCROUNGER ! | |||||||||||||||||||
The Scrounger was the first transmitter I built back in my Novice Days. It was published in the Sept 1964 Electronics Illustrated magazine, remember that one guys? It was a simple 6L6 type of rig crystal contoled for 80 & 40m and it was built on a pie pan.. I can't remember how much power mine ran but it was also my introduction to QRP type operating. I actually built several of them. Of course I no longer have them, or any pictures of my Novice station. Fond,Fond memories. I'm tempting to rebuild it here. I'm going to make it as close to the one I had that I can remember anyway.
Here is what I have so far, top wise anyway. Its built on a 8" x 8" x 2" pie pan. It was orginially built on a 9" x 9" x 2" piepan which
I can't even find these days. This one is a lot stronger built than the flimsy one I had as a Novice too. The brown tube socket towards the back is where a 5U4 will go. Behind the variable capacitor will be the tank coil. I do think I'll use a single section capacitor soon as I can get one tho. Next step will be drilling and punching holes out for the parts I do have.
I need to take some time and take a picture of mine. I've made some progress altho not alot. I've been drilling holes, puching tube socket holes and have the transformer mounted. I've also collected some more parts. Soon as I place a order for some parts I need I'll start doing some building.
My Scrounger project has been put on hold for the time being. I'm guilty of having too many irons in the fire. I still hope to complete it someday. If you go to Steve's page you can find a copy of the article. March 28, 2005 |
