ABOUT US Several local leaders in the Rochester NY area, sharing interests and expertise in fluency, joined together in the fall of 2006 to charter the Rochester Chapter of the National Stuttering Association. Other fine local Stuttering Support groups of one form or another had come and gone over the last 30 years (e.g. Summit Seekers of Rochester piloted by SLP Pat Sacco; SUNY Geneseo Harold Starbuck mini-clinics chaired by SLP Kathleen Jones, Ph.D, a National Stuttering Project group held at Delco Products, an NSP / NSA group which met at the Al Sigl Center, Camp Talkalot for teens, etc.) - but unfortunately no such group was still being offered on a recurring basis. The time seemed ripe for a fresh focus toward mutual support, in benefit to both adults and teens who stutter. In cooperation with the Nazareth College Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders, two new National Stuttering Association age-specific Stuttering Support Groups began meeting in January 2007 - one group focused on Adults and another group focused on Teens (TWST - Teens Who Stutter). Current group leadership includes Speech Language Pathologists with fluency expertise, as well as adults who stutter. A number of Speech Language Pathology graduate students take part in our meetings as well. Monthly meetings are held on the campus of Nazareth College in Pittsford NY. Our meetings are open to all who stutter, including parents of teens who stutter and speech language pathologists. There is no cost to attend. Referrals from area professionals are appreciated. |
