On May 26, 2001, I was asked to speak at the Illinois State Convention of the Italian American War Veterans of the United States on the subject of the epidemic, “Hepatitis C”, how it is effecting our veterans and the general population, and my recent lobbying trip to Washington D.C.
I mentioned: the over 4.9 Million Americans; 21.54% of all Veterans; the Surgeon General’s hesitance to alert the public as to the severity and magnitude of this epidemic; the possibility of “airgun/jet injector” transmission (at least one Congressman & Vietnam Veteran is now concerned enough, that he says he’s going be tested); the lack of funding for awareness, research, and eradication; and the petition circulated and online at www.oocities.org/nseiff.
The result was an overwhelming resolution that the state and all posts will now join the Disabled Veterans Association of Illinois, Post #2 of the Italian American War Veterans, Chapter #209 of the Vietnam Veterans of America, VietNow, and
Veterans Strike Force-1 in the support of all efforts on this cause, and support of the American Liver Foundation’s efforts and events in the state. Also recommended and tentatively approved by State Commander Robert Baratta and National Commander John Palmucci, was that a letter be drafted to Congress for every member nationwide to sign.
“UNITED WE STAND”, THANK YOU GENTLEMEN

Dear Mr. President:
We the Italian American War Veterans of the United States fully support the efforts of the petition for increased funding for Hepatitis C online at www.oocities.org/nseiff. Because of the overwhelming percentage (21.54%) of all veterans tested positive, the increasing rate among the general population, and of documentation gathered by Norm Seiff of the Disabled Veterans Association of Illinois and others, we ask that the transmission of the disease by “AIRGUN/JET INJECTOR” inoculations used in basic training of all military PRE-DURING-POST the Vietnam War Area be investigated. We also encourage you to persuade the Surgeon General to finally alert the public as to the severity and magnitude of this epidemic.
Thank you.
