Dear Mr. President:

A proclamation is in order;
I feel that we should set aside
The day of September eleventh
To show our grief and pride.

Let every person stand up
For a moment of silent prayer;
Let every flag fly half-mast
To let them see we care!

A year will have passed away
Since the terrorist attack;
Let us honor those who died
That never can come back.

Let the families of the victims
Know that America is still strong
That we love our freedom
And will fight just to belong.

We cannot change the tragedy
But we can do what's right
To honor and remember -
To light candles this night.

Let every heart pray for peace,
For safety of those we love
Let the music dry the tears;
And when push comes to shove

Let us stand together,
Fight back if we must -
But pause for just a day
To renew our trust.

A national day of mourning
Seems appropriate to me
For a country that will endure
And for Lady Liberty!

Now I am just one person
Who would keep the torch alive;
Who will fly the flag and light
A candle for the hearts that strive

To live on through the heartache
To live on through the pain
And pray that such disaster
Will never, ever come again.
Bruised, not broken -
We are down, but we are not out!
You've landed a blow
To our spirit, our dreams
But I want you to know -
That the bleeding stops;
And the wounds will heal -
Our zest for living
Has more appeal.

Bruised, not broken -
Life will go on,
I've no doubt of that
Our families and friends
Will help us up again
We're closer now
Than we've ever been!

Bruised, not broken -
Circle the wagons,
Stand the guard -
Terror lurks
In our own backyard!
Fight for freedom,
Fight for life -
Fight for our country
To end the strife.

And God help us all!
Day of Infamy

Etched in the minds of every American
Were the tragic events of that day
When two planes crashed into the towers
And two more crashed on their way.

One plane hit the Pentagon -
Bursting into deadly flame
The world will long remember
And it will never be the same.

Another plane had turned back
From a planned flight to the west
Heading back to Washington
But in Pennsylvania came to rest.

For the men on board were thwarted
In their quest to cause more pain
They'd never reach the capital
Passengers on board took the gain!

As the first plane hit the tower
A cloud of thick black smoke
Drew the attention of the world;
So many hearts it broke.

A second plane hit the other tower
Smashing into it with such force;
A ball of fire engulfed several floors
As the plane flew its final course.

Heat from the fire blasted
And shattered every steel wall;
As the first tower started to crumble
Millions watched its downward fall.

Rescue units from New York City
Responded to the call of alarm -
As the nation watched and waited
Their courage in the way of harm.

Firefighters and police rescue units
Were there upon the scene that day
Trying to save the lives they could
And so many of their own would pay.

Reports of thousands wounded,
Reports of many dead and gone;
Reports of trapped firefighters
The news kept on and on -

In the second tower stood a man
Looking at the scene of despair,
Shock and resignation on his face
And no way out of there.

Flames and heat so intense below
He had little choice to make -
He climbed out the shattered window;
The final plunge he'd take.

Caught by cameras in his jump -
Another image carried to our grave;
Hard to believe that anyone
Was left in there to save.

The second tower also fell
Down onto the street below -
How many trapped inside
We may never really know.

Yet in the rubble and the ash
Some were pulled out alive;
A miracle that any lived -
So many did not survive.

The image that we hold dear
When all is said and done -
Is that of firefighters
Raising our flag at setting sun.

Wounded as we have never been,
The spirit of America rang true
As the flags across America
Were unfurled and flying too.

The real heroes of that day
Were men and women like you and me -
Who pledged their lives to help
America - stay free!
ON SEPTEMBER ELEVENTH

The plane had crashed hard
Into the top of the first tower;
Thick black smoke and flames,
Ash and debris shower -

Watching in disbelief
Petrified with shock -
Those in the second tower
Quickly took stock

Of their own situation,
And prepared to go
As quickly as they could
Down to the streets below.

They jammed the elevators
And some just took the stairs;
As they descended downward
There were many, many prayers -

That they would make it safely
They thought that they just might;
Until the second plane hit -
Their building shook with fright!

A fireball of jet fuel -
No one could make it out alive;
So many lives lost that day
Not one soul could survive!

Standing in the office
Was one last solitary soul
On his face was disbelief
At the thought of the death toll.

Fire down below him,
The roaring and the heat
He thought about his family
As he looked down at the street.

When the first plane had hit
He had picked up the phone
And made - one last call
To say he wasn't coming home.

The heat was so intense
That the steel began to break
His only thought was
That it was much too late -

A look of resignation
Came across his face,
No time for reason
He must leave this place!

He ran to the window
With the shattered glass
Climbed up and jumped
As other bodies fell past.

As eagles fly in triumph
And every flag haft-mast;
In every heart will be
Memories that forever last.

We will not forget them
That died that day of infamy
Terrorists may have wounded
But the soul of America flies free.
