OCEAN COUNTY COLLEGE FALL OPEN REGATTA
SEPTEMBER 20, 21 2003 held at IHYC
Asbury Park Press Article Saturday Sept.20, 2003
Sophomore Matt Goetting, captain of the Ocean County College sailing club, has developed a reputation as a daring sailor. He loves to take chances in competition and often makes split-second decisions about the direction of the wind. MICHAEL SYPNIEWSKI photo Kristin Asay, of Beachwood, sails a Club 420 sailboat for Ocean County College, maneuvering around the windward marker during the Fall Open Regatta, held off the Island Heights Yacht Club yesterday. Goetting's calls were on the mark yesterday and his adept seamanship helped spark Ocean County College to a fourth-place finish in the Fall Open Regatta. Ocean County College, which began a sailing program just over a year ago, played host to 11 other colleges and universities at Island Heights Yacht Club. Georgetown University and St. Mary's College took the first and second spots, with Fordham University finishing third, but OCC coach Roy J. Wilkins was delighted with his team's performance. "Georgetown and St. Mary's are both nationally-ranked teams, so to finish so close to to them is a feather in our cap," Wilkins said. Goetting and his sailing partner, Kristin Asay, put on a clinic in the afternoon competition, winning consecutive races. Both races were nearly identical, with Goetting and Asay getting off to a great start, making sharp turns at the windward mark and then holding off their competition down the stretch. Asay, a freshman from Beachwood, was positively beaming when she exited the winning boat. "This was so exciting, so much fun," Asay said. "Matt and I really worked well together. I just listen to what he tells me to do because he has such a sharp eye on the sea. He know what is best for the boat." "The key to sailing is to think with a clear head and stay focused," said Goetting, of Point Pleasant. "The wind was shifting a lot so I decided to stay middle right and it was the right move. Once we took the windward turns, we really took off." Freshman Greer Scholes was another sailor instrumental in OCC's success. He notched a first-place victory in one race, after a sixth-place in another. "I was awesome to win, but it was very nerve-wracking," Scholes said. "You want so badly to stay in front, it really shakes you up. We did our best to win the start and fortunately we were able to hang on from there." Scholes, who grew up in Island Heights, said his sailing experience over the local waters was a big edge. "You know what sides of the course are advantageous," Scholes said. "You have a feel for the problem spots and that helps you stay out of trouble." Like Scholes, OCC's Andy DeFeo grew up in Island Heights and took advantage of his local knowledge to notch a fourth-place finish in one race, sailing with teammate Eva Must. "I was a little nervous going out because I really hadn't been practicing much this year," DeFeo said. "It was neat competing here because I've been a member of this club for 10 years. To sail in a regatta over your home course is quite a thrill." Goetting said the OCC team is young and relatively inexperienced, but it has really come together. "With four, five freshmen on the team, we are basically beginners," Goetting said. "To finish right behind established programs like Georgetown and St. Mary's shows we have really made a lot of progress in a short time." Princeton University finished fifth.
Ocean County College Fall Open Ocean County College 9-20, 9-21-03 Ocean County College hosted its second ever MAISA regatta. Island Heights Yacht Club was the host. We had wonderful after hurricane weather. On Saturday we had southeast breeze from 8-12mph. On Sunday it was a bit lighter with 4-10mph for the northeast. Sunday was very shifty and the racecourse was full of light air holes. We had a delayed start on Saturday to allow teams to travel in non tropical storm conditions. Racing began at 1:00 and went to 6:00 with a BBQ immediately following the racing at IHYC. Sunday racing began at 9:30 and was finished by 2:00. We sailed a full rotation of 24 races. We had excellent race management. Many thanks to William D. Bogardus, Bill Warner and Will Demand. Thanks go to Judges Drew Seibert, Len Egee and Rogen Brown. Four protests were filed with two disqualifications. Thanks go to Colie Sails for donating the regatta T Shirts.
