Gypsy (left) and Cody - Pals always
Gypsy arrived at the shelter November 17, 1998 severely malnourished, weight approximately 450 lbs, estimated 20 year old chestnut Tennessee Walker mare.  On a scale from 1 to 10, body weight was below 1.  She had an impacted esophagus due to weakened throatwalls and severe inability to chew food resulting in pneumonia.  A vet was called in and she immediately was put on an antibiotic (SMZ) for the pneumonia, was wormed and rabies shot given.  The vet also tube-fed her through the nose with a watery substance of alfalfa pellets soaked in water to a consistency of a tea, she was unalbe to eat on her own.  She was fed, tube-fed for two days before an equine vet specializing in dentistry was called in.  At this time he grinded and reshaped what little teeth she had left.  Gypsy's condition was the result of her being left in a pasture without proper care.  During the winter, while snow was on the ground and no grass was to be found, Gypsy ate the bark off of trees to survive.

It was very evident when she laid down, she would always lay with her head downhill.  We noticed that the fluids from her lungs would pour out of her mouth when she did this which quickly eliminated the build-up of those fluids.  After 4 days, she drank the tea on her own, then we started to thicken her feed to a gruel consistency.

At this time she was being fed Triple Crown Senior mixed with alfalfa pellets, and vitamins.  Due to winter setting in rapidly we switched her over to a very high protein pelleted feed.  After a month, she refused to eat that feed, so we switched her back to Senior and alfalfa pellets soaked in warm water, and she started eating again.

In 2001 it became evident she had Cushings Disease, we then switched her over to a supplement called TF Performance & Show.  Transfer Factor Plus has the amazing ability to boost the immune system.  To learn more on this product contact Todd Knickel at www.mv4-life.com/todd.  We also, at this time found a new feed, Blue Seal Senior, that let us eliminate mixing senior and alfalfa pellets.  This is a complete feed and allowed us to feed on feed instead of mixing two.  This too was fed mixing water with the pellets and turning it into a gruel consistency.

Gypsy did wonderful until Cushings took over her body.  Please study up on Cushings Disease.

Gypsy is now running with the angels.
